――I love you.

△▼△▼△▼△

――With a deep exhale, he pulled taut the bowstring of resolve deep within his heart.

???: [――――]

His exchange with those girls a moment prior, especially the consideration of Petra, caused an ache in his chest. Even Meili, with her insincere devilish attitude, and Flam, with her businesslike demeanor, seemed to worry about him in their own ways, and so with Beatrice at the forefront, this was a lineup of superb young ladies.

???: [As expected of the Lolimancer, I guess. Though, it seems like a dishonor for both sides.]

Regardless of how it had been when he had first been bestowed that title, Petra and the others would not stay young forever. So long as he was accompanied by the eternally youthful Beatrice, however, the day would never come that the person in question would be stripped of that alias. Of course, it would be a different story if he ever parted ways with Beatrice, but――,

???: [If only he could do such a thing, eh?]

In all likelihood, it would have made this plan considerably easier to execute.

In fact, with the exception of Beatrice, he had never encountered a Great Spirit of the Yin Attribute that was amicable to humans. He considered that to also be part of her design, but he could not speak for certain on the intentions of the Witch’s links, separate from the Witch whom he had known.

At any rate, as a specialist of the Yin Attribute, and considering her origins, there was a fear that Beatrice would be able to decipher an essential factor to the plan. And so, the timing was critical.

Beatrice was soul-bound to the target through a Contract, so he would have no choice but ensnare her in the forbidden art as well.

???: [――――]

As the sound of tension creaked, he could tell that the bowstring was being stretched tight.

Thus, he entered the Library of Taygeta, the vast floor packed full with bookshelves housing a tremendous quantity of books, a sight that would always overwhelm him no matter how many times he saw it―― and there did he witness.

???: [Murak.]

Receiving the full support of the Great Spirit, that man obtained the maximum effect of that brief incancation, and hopping on top of the tall bookshelf, he stealthily concealed a single volume.

???: [――――]

Even if he could tell it was a book from a distance, he could not discern just whose name was written upon its spine.

The Books of the Dead in that Library, aside from the titles, were all of the same appearance, with nary a distinction in their thickness. Upon consideration, it was a bit of a strange matter; there was no way that a child who succumbed to illness at the tender age of five, and someone who died peacefully at the age of one hundred after having lived a life full of ups and downs, would have books of the same thickness.

There was no doubt that this Library was a place that took advantage of Od Lagna’s properties, but it ought to have been the Witch who had made them manifest in the form of books.

In that case, why had the Witch gone out of her way to create a Library that was so difficult to comprehend?

???: [When you finally find that which you seek, you would not desire any excess noise, now would you?]

Vocalizing an utterance that the Witch herself seemed like she might have said, it sounded like it might have really been the right answer, filling him with unpleasant feelings.

To begin with, he wished to avoid recalling the Witch as much as he could. ――Ever since she died, he found himself recalling the Witch as if recoil from everything that occurred up to that point.

Witch: [――There is nobody who can defeat you, you whom I created.]

For a moment, he pondered. If this was a Library containing books that chronicled the lives of the deceased, then naturally, it stood to reason that the Witch’s book would also be somewhere around here.

Thus――,

???: [――Look at that, it is mine victory again.]

The voice to which he had plugged his ears, averted his eyes, and kept at a distance in rejection from his soul; the Book of the Dead of the voice’s owner, would also be located here.

???: […What do you mean it was your victory, Priscilla?]

In those unforgettable last moments, in those final minutes he had shared with her, she had worn that triumphant smile. The declaration of victory that had accompanied that smile, even now, he did not understand its meaning.

Even if he understood, it would not change a thing. After all, she was no longer among them. After one passed away, it would no longer be possible to exchange words or feelings with them.

But, even if it was purely a one-sided affair, this Great Library Pleiades made understanding possible.

???: […Am I an idiot? No, I’m definitely an idiot. Even though that sorta thing’s nothing more than a pretext.]

Everything was for the sake of the plan, a cover story to get that man and the others to console his heartbroken self, laying the groundwork for him to carry out what he had set out to do alongside the Witch, the plan he had once abandoned.

To think his heart would actually be swayed by that, it would be a tale far worse than going out for wool and coming home shorn.

Above all else――,

???: [Please, don’t save me.]

If he were to read her book, if he were to once again be scorched by the radiance of the sun he had failed to keep from setting, then just like the day he gave up on being a Following Star, he might waver once more.

The foolish star who did not deserve to be saved, would waver once more.

That was why――,

???: [――Your stars, were bad.]

Resigning himself to those words, he resumed his halted steps, and proceeded through the Library.

The singular book that had been stealthily hidden atop the bookshelf, although he had not seen the title of that book, he knew what name had been inscribed on its spine without even needing to see it.

If it was a Book of the Dead that man had hidden due to finding it inconvenient, there was only one title that it could have borne. ――And, finding one of those same books had been an essential puzzle piece for the enactment of this plan.

The two volumes he had wished to track down, those being the Books of the Dead belonging to himself, and to that man, had been found.

So, all that remained was the time for action――,

Man: [Good grief. It’s like I’m a mischievous kid who’s getting up to no good in the library…]

He slowly walked up behind the man who spoke these words as he scratched his head. The other party seemed unaware of his approach, and parting from the bookshelf where he had just hidden the book,

Man: [It’d be a problem if Ezzo-san, the very embodiment of a curious mind, were to find it… I mean, there’s also the possibility that a bunch of people come marching in here, so maybe I gotta dispose of them all? How many volumes in total would there――]

???: [――Dispose of what, bro?]

Man: [――Hk.]

As soon as he called out to the grumbling back, the other party’s shoulders jumped up in an exaggerated motion. Slowly, the man turned to face him, a faint stiffness strewn upon his countenance, making it obvious that he was feeling guilty about what he had done.

At the reaction of the other party, doing a clumsy job of hiding things, he deliberately made a grand motion of shrugging his shoulders,

???: [Oioi, you’re getting way too startled. I was just trying to make small talk.]

Man: […Yeah, sorry, sorry. Someone hearing you when you’re talking to yourself is actually pretty embarrassing, you know?]

???: [I get where you’re coming from with that, but I find it troubling that you’re making me out to be the bad guy ‘cause of that, yeah?]

Man: [The bad guy…]

Drawing back his chin as the other party inclined their head, he directed his attention to behind himself. Then, waddling over from that direction with lovely footsteps, approached Beatrice.

She wedged her small body in between him and the other party, and while puffing up her cheeks,

Beatrice: [Hey, you, don’t startle Subaru all of a sudden like that, in fact. Whenever Betty isn’t watching, Subaru has what’s known as a flea’s heart, I suppose.]

???: [A flea’s heart… really, bro does? I didn’t take him for that sorta guy, though.]

Man: [If that evaluation’s based on my boldness and audacity, I’ll gladly take it in stride, but what the hell did you see in me to make you think that way?]

???: [――Let’s see. Well, bro, I might actually know a lot more about you than you think, you know?]

Responding to the words of the man, who patted the head of Beatrice as she came to his defense, he took a moment to think before keeping it to a relatively harmless answer.

If he mentioned any further information than what he had brought up just now―― that was, the fact that he even knew about his inferiority complex and complicated crossroads with his parents before coming to this world, just what would he think?

Of course, he would never do anything so foolish. He had been urged by those impulsive feelings many times, but on those occasions, he would endure it by fiddling with the metal fixtures on his helmet.

A routine for when he went into deep thought, the metallic clank that warned him against forgetting about the plan.

Beatrice: [That is rather interesting, in fact. It is quite shameless to claim such knowledge about Subaru before Betty, I suppose. You are making light of the sweet relationship between Spirit and Contractor, in fact.]

???: [It’s precisely because it’s sweet. Good grief, sorry for getting in the way of your passionate honeymoon.]

As he clicked and clacked the joints of his helmet, Beatrice stood with her arms crossed, thoroughly offended. Shrugging his shoulders in an effort to not upset her, the other party awkwardly scratched his cheek,

Man: [Nah, don’t worry about it. Beako and I get all lovey-dovey whenever time allows it, and right now, well, see? We’ve gotta prioritize the Library, don’t we?]

???: [Thank you for accommodating me on everything, yeah? No, seriously, no joke, lemme thank you again. Even if it’s just three days, it must have been troublesome to set aside this time for me. Beako-chan, I’m sorry for bringing bro along with me. Thanks for coming with us.]

Beatrice: [Betty and Subaru are one, so it is a matter of course that we are together, I suppose. ――Also, Betty is not so benevolent as to repeat the same warning many times, I suppose. Correct it by yourself, in fact.]

???: [Gotcha, gotcha. ――She’s very kind, your kid.]

Man: [Ngh, yeah.]

The man gave a wry smile, struggling to get his words out, and Beatrice gently clasped his hand.

For some reason, the conversation was not quite bouncing along. Though it brought him no joy, he and the other party had good, responsive chemistry, and the tempo of their back-and-forth ball game of a conversation ought to have flowed smoothly. For it to have become this stilted, was perhaps because he had thought something inconvenient had been spotted. ――Perhaps, it was because he had concealed a book different from the one he had expected.

For instance, could it have been one of the two volumes he had envisioned just earlier?

Man: [Al… um, how are you feeling?]

???: [――. What kind of question is that, it’s like you’re the parent of an adolescent who’s struggling to get a grasp on a sense of distance… As you can see, no results just yet. I thought that it might be possible in three days, but man, I’m really at a loss with this number of books. It’s really on the level of finding a single needle dropped in a desert, isn’t it?]

Man: [――Hk, but, don’t give up man. Let’s search properly! I’ll also do my best to help!]

???: [Oioi, bro?]

Just when he thought that, the other party suddenly adopted a proactive position, taking him aback.

Time and time again, the other party had vowed unwavering sincerity towards him, proclaiming that he would be of help. Neither did he think that was a lie, nor did he find that aggravating in itself. ――After all, he had no expectations.

That which he had hoped for the most, that which he had wished the man to do, he had not done.

That was why――,

???: [Knock it off with the sentiments that muddy up exactly which one of us had wanted to come here in the first place. It wouldn’t make any sense if I’m not getting as enthusiastic as you, bro.]

Man: [Then do it. Let’s do it, as if it were a matter of life and death. For three days, we’ll give it everything we’ve got. Then…]

A tremble ran through that voice. ――Not his own, he heard the voice of the other party trembling.

He had far too much empathy, or perhaps, a wave that already ought to have passed had come crashing back in, stirring those emotions anew. The feelings of regret and lamentation, were things that man felt far more than the ordinary person. He knew that well.

Between himself and this man, they were the only two people throughout the entire world to possess it: the curse of their Authorities.

Merely, there was the man who could use it to save those whom he loved, and then there was his own self, unable to do the same.

Thus, so long as the man’s love was allowed to persist, it would eventually be born. ――The being that would bring about the world’s end.

In order to prevent that, at the very least, he would need to fulfill the duty of the Following Star――,

Beatrice: [――Subaru.]

Holding hands with the man who had cast his head down, his voice trembling, Beatrice quietly called his name.

The emotions filling that call were tranquil, and contrary to her cute appearance, there was a mystical solemnity that seemed to prove that she, too, was a Great Spirit who had lived for quite a long time.

Man: [――――]

At the address of the Great Spirit, the person in question held his breath, giving no response.

Witnessing that reaction, he fiddled again with the fixtures on his helmet, and decided. ――After another comment or two, finishing the verbal rally, he would begin.

As the other party had stated, they would be searching the Library in this Tower for a period of three days. The more of that time limit he depleted, the more his head would start to wander elsewhere. Ergo, he would take action before that could happen.

Man: [――Three days, is that not good enough?]

The man’s words, spoken as if wringing them out, sounded a bit desperate; was that perhaps a reflection that he was also getting a bit nervous? ――It made him think for a bit.

If he did find the Book of the Dead across a three-day search, and could fully glean the emotions that woman who was no longer among them had left behind in her final moments, what might happen?

He could say it with certainty. ――It would not change a thing.

These wounds would never be healed, and this pain would never fade. To begin with, he desired no such thing.

And so, in response to the question the other party had hurled his way, despite knowing that it would be a complete divergence from what he had actually been asked, he deliberately answered with the following:

???: [――Your stars, were bad.]

Even for himself, it was unclear whether he viewed those stars through a positive or negative gaze.

Present in this place were two stars, the Pleiades and Aldebaran―― nay, Subaru and Rigel, and as they faced off, it was unclear who was being condemned as at fault, and who was being consoled as having done nothing wrong, even for himself.

Aldebaran: [――――]

He had gotten far too emotional. He had also done a poor job in keeping the conversational rally going this time.

If he kept going like that, he would quite likely get drawn in and find himself uttering something that could be perceived as suspicious. He had already decided. He would do it on the next one, he had decided.

The other party who had fallen silent, the man who had been named for the stars, and bestowed the names of the stars, after he finished his next remark, it would commence. ――Passing Mana through his Gate, formulating the technique, he opened up the entryway for the forbidden art.

Then――,

Subaru: [――Al…]

Then, his eyes met with Natsuki Subaru’s, a face on the verge of tears.

Subaru: [――Ol Shamak.]

An incantation, one not of his own. ――He understood.

Once again, in the battle he had needed to win no matter what, Aldebaran had been defeated.

???: [――Look at that, it is mine victory again.]

Alongside the triumphant smile of the lovely woman he could never get back, he heard her voice. ――The next instant, the world of Aldebaran cut to black.

△▼△▼△▼△

???: [――Natsuki-dono, while it may not serve as any comfort, your fears were not misplaced. He had been kneading Mana, formulating a technique. A single slip up, and you likely would have found yourselves in completely opposite positions. I fully support your judgement as having been the best course of action.]

Having stood witness over the entire affair, the words of the dwarf―― of Ezzo Cadner, served as no consolation to Subaru’s heart whatsoever, just as he had said.

Was there really no other way to settle things without anyone getting hurt?

???: [Captain, my amazin’ self doesn’t really get it. ‘S just, ‘s just…!  Even tho’ I don’t understand anythin’, my amazin’ self can just say this…! I’m so happy you’re safe, Captain!]

Just like Ezzo, tasked with monitoring the situation, the one who was like a younger brother to him expressed his feelings of frustration as he embraced Subaru’s shoulders with his burly arms and straightforward words.

And, he was not the only one nestling close to Subaru,

Beatrice: [Subaru, you made a decision, I suppose… Even though Betty could have taken it all on for you, you still got yourself hurt like a fool, in fact.]

Subaru: [Beatrice…]

Beatrice: [But, Betty and Subaru performed that forbidden art together, I suppose. Subaru prepared the technique, Betty formulated the spell, Subaru performed the incantation, and Betty passed the Mana through. Hence, Betty will take on half, in fact. It would be unfair for you to carry too much on your back, I suppose.]

Subaru: [――Hk.]

With his teeth clenched firmly, what Subaru tightly clutched in his right hand, so tight that his fingers did not seem like they would ever open up, was a black orb that his own inadequacy had left him with no choice but to enact.

――With no other means to stop him, it was the magic orb in which he had imprisoned Al.

Subaru: [――Sorry. There’s somewhere… I need to go.]

Deep within his chest, feeling a sensation as if all the organs in his body were trembling, Subaru got up from his knees, and slowly exited the Library of Taygeta.

Holding hands with Beatrice, and accompanied by the worried Garfiel and Ezzo, Subaru reprimanded his legs that were on the verge of collapsing, proceeding down the corridor until he reached the room he had set out for.

Then――,

???: [O~h? Onii-san, what’s the ma~tter? How’s the search in the library~?]

Seeing Subaru as he appeared in the entrance, both Meili, resting on a barrel in a corner of the room, and the small crimson scorpion, seated on her hair, inclined their heads in unison.

The sight of her safe and sound, acting in her usual cheeky manner, was something that struck his heart, but more than that――,

???: [――Subaru, what’s the matter? Did you forget something?]

Hearing Meili’s voice, the girl who had been facing the other way turned to his direction. Using a cooking utensil with a magic stone to stir the pot, she blinked her round eyes as they reflected Subaru.

Subaru: [――Ah.]

Laying his eyes upon that girl, Subaru’s body and soul reflexively tensed up.

After seeming a bit puzzled for a moment, she immediately stretched out her folded legs and asked “Subaru?”. Then, facing Subaru directly as he walked forward with unsteady, tottering steps,

Girl: [Beatrice-chan, did something happen? For some reason, Subaru is…]

Beatrice: [Something did happen, I suppose. But, Betty shall not say what, in fact… Merely, it seems like he had an overwhelming urge to see Petra right now, I suppose.]

Girl: [Me?]

Confused, the girl―― Petra, wore a look of surprise at Beatrice’s answer. Seeing those abundant changes in facial expression up close, the tension in Subaru’s cheeks slowly dissipated.

As Meili sighed a meaningful “Hm~mm?” behind him, Subaru gazed at Petra head-on, and after a moment of hesitation,

Subaru: [Petra, this is gonna sound strange, but… can I hug you?]

Petra: [――. Well, you can hug me without even needing to ask. Ah, actually, you shouldn’t do that. Just thinking about it makes my heart pound and seem like it’s going to bur―― st .]

As Petra smiled mischievously, before she could finish giving her gentle reply, Subaru reached his arms out and pulled her body close, embracing her within his chest.

Petra: [Um, uhh…]

At the sudden embrace, Petra could not hide her confusion. For a girl who, before he had even realized, was rapidly gaining nerves of steel, becoming better and better at not being shaken by anything, this was a clear discomposure to the point of being unusual.

But, there was not a single person here who would make fun of that fact.

After all――,

Petra: [Hey, Subaru, are you okay?]

A hand reached out from within his chest, softly caressing Subaru’s cheek.

At the question of the girl right before his eyes, so close that they could feel each other’s breaths, a distance where even the beating of their hearts collided, Subaru swallowed his breath, and forced a smile.

Subaru: [Of course――]

I’m okay. After all, he had to have been. After all, Petra was here, doing so well like this.

And it was not just Petra. Beatrice, Garfiel, Meili, Ezzo, and Flam; they were all unharmed. Everyone in the Tower, everyone who did not come to the Tower; they were all safe.

Everything bad that had transpired, all of it had been made to have never happened.

Of course, it was not as though he knew everything that had occurred, and he also knew that not all of it had been bad.

There had been confrontation and reconciliation, there had been betrayal and fellowship, there had been curses and vows, there had been hatred and love―― there had been Aldebaran and Natsuki Subaru.

Subaru: [――Maybe, I’m not okay.]

While embracing Petra, he caught a glimpse of the magic orb still clenched in his hand, spilling that murmur.

Then, the feeble sound that had escaped his lips as a murmur, did not end as merely a stilted voice. Little by little, his feelings morphed into tears, flowing out from the corners of his eyes.

Subaru: [――No.]

By puffing out his chest and declaring that he was okay, he had wished to repay Petra and the others, who had deemed it acceptable to force Subaru’s Return by Death, undoing many irreversible things in exchange for a world left behind.

He could not bring himself to do it. In sorrow and lament, with his own pathetic inadequacy, he could not puff out his chest.

Subaru: [I’m not, okay… hk.]

To Petra, who had offered up so much as compensation; to Rem, who ought to have regained everything; to Emilia, who never gave up on trying to converse with Al up to the bitter end; to Beatrice, who had deciphered the mechanisms of the forbidden art while sealed together with him, giving Subaru a trump card when he Returned by Death; to all the people who had participated in that battle, both those who Subaru knew and those who he did not; to absolutely everyone.

And finally, to Al, whom he had failed to get the chance to properly talk to――,

Subaru: [I’m sor――]

Petra: [――Subaru!!]

Suddenly, a sharp, loud voice cut off the apology he had been on the cusp of vocalizing.

It was the voice of Petra, looking up at Subaru from within his chest after having held her tongue. When he noticed that her round eyes were flickering with a storm of emotion, tears began to stream down Subaru’s face, and as she caressed it with her hands,

Petra: [You finally said it. You finally said that you aren’t okay.]

Subaru: [――Ah.]

Petra: [There’s no need to be so afraid. You don’t have to carry everything on your own. Right, Beatrice-chan?]

Beatrice: […A matter of course, in fact. Betty is Subaru’s partner, I suppose.]

Encouraged by Petra, Beatrice tightly hugged Subaru’s body. As Subaru was bewildered by the warmth of the two girls, Petra continued to smile,

Petra: [Meili-chan.]

Meili: [Ehh? I’d rather no~t. Petra-chan and Beatrice-chan should be enough…]

Petra: [Meili-chan.]

Meili: […Fi~ne.]

Hopping down from the barrel, Meili walked up next to Subaru with a sulky face while emitting an air of half-heartedness, lightly tugging on the hem of his clothes. As if in place of its master, the small crimson scorpion leapt off of her hair and onto Subaru’s shoulder, nestling its body close to his cheek.

Petra: [Garf-san.]

Garfiel: [Yeah! Captain!]

Subaru: [Gwohh!?]

A huge amount of force crashed into his back as if it had been waiting, causing him to reflexively raise a cry of pain. Desperately holding his ground to avoid tipping over and crushing Petra, he endured it. He had endured it, but――,

Petra: [Ezzo-san, Flam-chan, will you join us as well?]

Ezzo: [I am an outsider, so I shall refrain. Still, I stand by Natsuki-dono.]

Flam: [I only just arrived here, and have yet to fully process the situation, but… understood.]

The presence that only arrived later, without hesitation, nestled close near his right hip.

Now, in every direction, he was being completely embraced without any escape―― swarmed by such warmth, Subaru unwittingly exhaled a “Hah”.

Subaru: [What’s up with this?]

From an outside perspective―― in reality, Ezzo was looking on as a bystander, so from his perspective, just how foolish must Subaru and the others have looked in their current state?

With everyone all clumped together like this, it must have looked stupid.

Petra: [It’s fine. After all, the one who told me that I’m an idiot was none other than Subaru.]

Subaru: [Did I really say such a thing?]

Petra: [You did.]

Subaru: […Among all the people I know, there’s probably not a single person smarter than you, Petra.]

He truly believed that. Surely, that was the case. And so, it was obvious to her, clever as she was. Amazing. This was what it truly meant to be wise. There was a big difference from someone like Abel, who was just a clever idiot.

Subaru: [I’ve decided.]

His face was still covered in tears, he was still stuck in place being embraced by everyone’s kindness from all directions, and he had just admitted that he was not okay in the slightest, but he had made up his mind.

Subaru: [Al, it seems like you hated me so much that you could never forgive me, but…]

He did not know the true reason behind that. Only, he would not let things end without finding out.

So much had been on the verge of ending, but thanks to the determination of many people, unwilling to allow that ending, it had been averted; hence, although he was not okay whatsoever, Natsuki Subaru had decided.

That was――,

Subaru: [――I, no matter what, will definitely save you too.]

Even if he had committed abhorrent deeds that would have made him the enemy of the world, everything, both the good and the bad, had been made to have never happened by means of Return by Death; thus, that was Natsuki Subaru’s vow.

And, hearing that vow of Natsuki Subaru’s, Petra Leyte gave a satisfied nod,

Petra: [That’s my Subaru.]

――Indeed, the girl, who had not become the Witch of Tristitia, smiled.

    1. I cannot I really cannot, I am at work right now! I am crying.
It is just like what happened in stranger things season 4finale, how only a select few know what actually happened and the rest just go on living and doing things in pure ignorance.
All the while leaving the victims, nay the heroes broken and forgotten

        1. I don’t understand and don’t want to understand why progress, stakes, and character development need to be destroyed for the sake of the author’s desire to change nothing.

          1. “I don’t want to understand”—you open by admitting you’d rather ignore this arc’s redeeming qualities and still expect to be taken seriously? There was development: the narrative advances with the introduction of a new villain born from Subaru’s love, foreshadowed back in Arc 6. It fits the core theme of Return by Death and the isolation it forces, putting us in the place of someone who must endure it. It also connects with Priscilla’s Arc 8 remark: we’re made to witness the lovable sides of those we cannot love—characters whose growth and memories reset—and the unlovable sides of those we do love, like Al, who keeps the same desires and goals across loops.

            1. Thank you for wise words, This gave me far more insight into arcs messaging, as I’ve just finished chapter, everything feels pretty fresh. It’s difficult to reflect on everything that’s happened, but thanks to reply I feel I understand and appreciate this ending a lot more than I just did.

          2. Character development isn’t deleted just because the events were removed, sigh.

2025 and people still do not understand the difference between character development and character evolution.

And what does the arc’s ending have to do with Tappei’s desire to “not change anything”? If you read the author notes at the end of arc 9 you would know precisely why he choose the ending he did.

Besides, this all doesn’t matter, judge the story, not the author.

              1. I can’t get over just how torn up Subaru was by Al’s actions. Just desperately trying to get through to him and slipping before the Ol Shamak. The scene was amazing.
I would love to see how it would be animated and acted, especially with how it would contrast against the first time.

“Beatrice: [Subaru, you made a decision, I suppose… Even though Betty could have taken it all on for you, you still got yourself hurt like a fool, in fact.]”

I’m guessing this refers to Subaru preforming half of the actions of casting Ol Shamak and the resulting emotional pain it caused.

Granted I’m still Cor Leonis pilled and just desperately want to know what the hell is going on with that thing. I don’t even care about any 400 year old lore, just tell me wtf is going on with it.

            1. “Besides, this all doesn’t matter, judge the story, not the author”

We can judge the author for what he writes in the story.

              1. Then you are not judging the story and you are just making speculations about the author.

Feel free to do so, I guess. It is just that none of your criticisms will be valid that way.

          3. Second of all, stakes were not removed. Stakes refer to the possibility of loss. The possibility of loss doesn’t vanish just because “loss” didn’t occur this time. By that same logic, all stories in which the protagonist doesn’t die until the end of it have no stakes, since you know he’ll never die.

Stakes are defined by “what happens if the characters fail to intervene.”
If the combined efforts of all the camps had not converged on that point, the Arc 9 nightmare future would’ve stood as the final state of the world. That is the opposite of “no stakes.” It is literally: “if you don’t act in time, this is what reality becomes forever.”

        2. There are people that make cringey fanfics in their heads and then become mad at the author because the story deviates from that headcanon.

        3. It’s funny because you’re so close to having a correct comment, but this applies to you rather than the guy you’re replying to.

        4. yeah dude, insulting other people whose opinions differ from yours definitely shows you in a better light. How old are you? 11?

  1. Sigh. Well, looks like we’re back to suffering with amnesiac rem. Sigh. Hopefully this won’t last too long, but I’m not excited to see what’s in store. Let’s just hope the storm won’t be as rough to endure like last time. Sigh

  2. I was already spoiled on the reset, so I had more time to ponder on it, and ig I’m indifferent about it; not a huge fan however. It all depends how tappei takes it from here.

Rem fans got slided as usual, but it was obvious tappei included her to appease fans considering how forced her plot involvement was, bs power ups and what not. I wouldn’t have really cared had it not be the theme of arc 8, but I got ptsd from that the moment she was going toe to toe with yae and it bothered me quite alot, especially when the narrative was glazing yae to no end. Same could be said petra tbf, but she literally abandoned her humanity to counter Al, while rem defeated yae by “the reason is, love”.

    1. Not to mention her not killing yae by healing her, which bugs me. I know they have reason why, but it bugs the hell out of me thar rem and emilia were willing to spare al and yae and give them a second chance by saving them (emilia saving al from his grief from priscillas death).

Subaru and beatrice were kidnapped and were in danger of them being permanently gone from their lives. None of als group should be spared

      1. Part 2

I know people will give me shit, but look at this way before you answer: if a family member of yours was kidnapped and there was a risk something almost irreversible bad would happen to them, would you let them live and give them a chance to change their ways, or would you get your family back even if it means killing the culprits? Al is one thing since he can loop, but emilia shouldn’t be doing other than hunting him down and give him zero remorse for everything he’s done

        1. She likely knew though the power the author gave that she was related to Al and it likely hard to kill someone who spared you so many times.

        2. I wouldn’t do it, but there are many cases in real life of people who are willing to forgive and even free of charges those who attempted to kill their closed ones.

I already explained the reasons why Emilia and Rem did what they did in my other response though.

        3. Is because they forgive them and try to save them that make this characters special. It reminds me of the real story of the Israeli and musulman that work together to end the war even when their families were killed.

        4. The analogy should be: One of your family member(Aldebaran) who lost his wife is tweaking and kidnapped one of your close family member(Subaru)…What would you do?

      2. Rem wanted to not kill Yae because she could relate to her: there already were a lot of parallels between both; both were maids serving the person they loved, and both initially acted with aggression against that person. Yae could not understand her feelings up until her battle with Rem and Emilia, and when Rem noticed she began to understand them, she decided to not kill her and give her another chance.

Besides, this shows growth from Rem’s character: instead of killing anyone she deems potentially dangerous, she now decided to spare their lives.

Little did she know that a Volcanica blast was gonna sweep the entire battlefield and allow Yae to escape.

      3. About Emilia; Subaru and Al had a very good relationship prior to Priscilla’s death. Given Aldebaran’s lie that he came from another world (I still think this is a lie, so I’ll call it that), Subaru was able to see him as someone who shared a similar existential displacement, a “fellow outsider” who might understand his struggles better than anyone else in that world. They bonded over that unspoken mutual strangeness.

        1. For that reason, they became very close friends. Aside from that, Aldebaran helped both Subaru and Emilia many times throughout the story: in arc 5 with the magic stones, and all the way throughout arc 7 and 8. And for Emilia, Aldebaran reminded her of Subaru (and there are many reasons to justify this; from them being related to both of them having an authority that makes them suffer). Add to that the fact that Emilia, just like Subaru, is extremely forgiving; being willing to give another chance to Madelyn despite her repeatedly killing others and trying to kill her.

          1. Now, taking all of this into consideration, is it really crazy that Emilia would want to save Al? Al in this situation is the equivalent of one’s best friend going down the wrong path and destroying themself from the inside. And Emilia has already proven that she refuses to accept the idea of abandoning someone just because they became dangerous or unstable. She sees the person before the sin: the wounded heart before the violent reaction.

To Emilia, Al isn’t some random antagonist suddenly standing in her way. He’s someone Subaru trusted. Someone who once protected her. Someone whose pain she can recognize because Subaru carries a similar pain.

And just like Subaru at the end of the arc, who promises to save him, she wants to save Al.

    2. I don’t think Rem fans got slided, Rem’s character arc of discovering Subaru’s RBD and forging a better relationship with Emilia, with her final decision of letting Subaru use RBD, all were pretty good. That it was a form of growth self-contained into a single arc doesn’t diminish its value.

As for her winning against Yae, there were a lot of factors that aided in Yae’s defeat: her being completely tired from several days of fighting, her feelings of anger (which made Rem be able to sense Yae in an easier manner), them falling in a rotating disk, Yae’s weapon not being suuited for that environment and etc…

Also, Rem didn’t defeat Yae thanks to solely love: it was thanks to Felix casting a healing spell on her.

      1. Reading your comments after having to deal with my twitter timline while the chapters were releasing untranslated and then having to deal with wct comments as always feels like seeing the pearly gates after dying

    3. Rem and Petra got the most memorable moments in the arc, so saying she got sidelined is beyond absurd. Maybe characters that actually got sidelined, like Emilia and Garfiel, will have more of a role this arc.

  3. I was hoping for more on how al would be dealt with in the end, but ig he was always gonna end up like this considering we still have three arcs left; though I would’ve liked him knowing what had transpired. But as the book hasn’t been destroyed yet (is it even possible?), there’s always a chance he could.

All in all, this arc rekindled my kove for rezero, which was decimated first by arc 7/8, and then the abhorrent season 3; all the revisionist takes it brought, reducing one of the best chapters to just another episode, and one of the best antagonist to villain #66372. But it unfortunately couldn’t surpass arc 6, which it very well could, but tappei had to tappei.

9/10. Rocky start, peak fiction, okay end. Al top 10 character frfr

  4. So, Tappei laugh to the fans who dreamed of changes in the overall plot and Emilia’s camp. At the beginning of Arc 12, all members of Emilia’s camp, except for Subaru, Meili, and Rem, will be in exactly the same place as at the beginning of Arc 5. A lot of important things that fans have been waiting for years will never happen. Tappei doesn’t want to change the status quo. I’ve lost all the expectations I had for Re:Zero. Surprisingly, Re:Zero’s main problem is that the author is a huge fan. He brought Re:Zero to the position he wanted long ago, and he doesn’t care what the fans want. Of course, there are many hardcore fans who now instantly changed their minds because they absolutely cannot accept that anything in Re:Zero is less than perfect.

    1. There are always going to be people defending this nonsense, especially the great reset.

“At the beginning of Arc 12, all members of Emilia’s camp, except for Subaru, Meili, and Rem, will be in exactly the same place as at the beginning of Arc 5.”

Pretty much. You can cut a lot of these characters out and lose nothing. The emilia camp sucks

    2. I don’t see how this is Tappei laughing to fans. As I said to another commenter, you should read the author notes at the end of arc 9. I would usually make a long explanation about them but, since it is spoiler material, I’ll leave it for when the arc 9 finale releases.

How is Meili the same way she was at the beggining of arc 5? How is Rem the same way as the beggining of arc 5?

      Wtf are you saying.

      1. Oh, misread it, my bad. You mean that everyone but those three would have changed.

And that is not really the case; if you take into consideration other Emilia camp members, being those Emilia, Otto, Petra and even Roswaal, how are them the same way they were in arc 5? Petra’s involvement in the camp was very reduced in arc 5, Emilia was just starting to repay those around her for the protection they gave her throughout the past (and her relationship with the camp was more distant than at the end of arc 6), Otto became progressively willing to do anything in his reach to aid the camp, working in the shadows of the camp to protect Emilia and Subaru (something we started to see in arc 5 but wasn’t fully developed), Roswaal became far more active when it comes to helping the camp, etc…

    3. All of that lost growth in between arc 8 and 9 is precisely one of the darknesses Tappei talks about when it comes to RBD; RBD washes away both all the good and all the bad. This decision has nothing to do with Tappei being unwilling to change the status quo.

And people disputing what you say does not mean they consider Re:Zero to be perfect. I, for example, am completely neutral about the Great Reset: I didn’t like it nor dislike it.

People challenging what you say does not mean they consider the story to be perfect.

  5. I don’t know if it’s gotta do with better translation. First time I read it, I was disappointed but now rereading it, I’m pleased. Anyways do you think this library was actually created as a mausoleum for Al considering the password to access this library was “Rigel”

  6. And Al is now officially the third person Subaru has directly vowed to save him, right after Emilia and Satella

      1. That was a ” I’ll help both of you” not what he said to Emilia, Satella, and Al. It says that in the anime but not the Japanese version

  7. A bit disappointed by the great reset. I do wish that Subaru learned more than “Everyone worked hard. Petra worked super hard, Rem came back”. Although the Petra stuff was good, I feel like if the consequences of it were allowed to linger a bit more it would have been better. I’m not even sure how her potential witchyness would ever factor back into the main story even.

Still though, I find this redo of the initial sealing scene to be pretty painful. Poor Subaru.
This is also the most blatant version of what it’s like to fight against Natsuki Subaru we’ve seen. It really is an unfair power for everyone involved.

    1. I’m not even sure how her potential witchyness would ever factor back into the main story even.

Would’ve been interesting to see, but interesting things had to be erased for some reason. We could’ve had emilia learn a lesson and be criticized more about wanting to save al. Too bad that idea went out of the window

  8. First time commenter,
this has been my second favorite arc after arc 6 but god DAMN i hated this chapter
60 chapters of (almost) always peak for nothing….

  9. ol shamak is “a forbidden art that reliably sealed any who had been granted power by a Witch Factor.” (last chapter)
aldebaran “was not the holder of a Witch Factor” (from chapter 55)

but ol shamak worked on him. surely this means that ol shamak works on people without a witch factor?
if this is the case, why doesnt al use ol shamak on literally anybody except felt and subaru?
it is genuinely my biggest gripe with this arc, cos it really feels like he had so many ways to win but he just doesnt try to.

    1. he could have sealed rom when he knocked him unconscious (to prevent him leaking information about his authority, he even says “So that you don’t wake up for six days, I’ll put you to sleep.” but he doesnt)
he could have sealed petra (although maybe this makes reinhard jump him cos the WoE loses aggro, but we dont know if this would happen because he doesn’t try it)
he could have sealed ferris to regain his authority (he knows that ferris is one of his” three natural enemies” (chapter 56) but he doesnt have any countermeasures?)

but he does none of this and forgets about possibly his greatest spell for the entire duration of the arc?

      1. the only explanation i can think of is that beatrice is naturally better at casting the spell than he is because shes a great spirit of the yin attribute, and thats why it works on people w/o a witch factor in her case

but all that this changes is that he has to seal felt and rom together (ol shamak worked on her and has an aoe effect), and if he used it on ferris it would just cut her gate like it did with sphinx

which would still be enough for him to get his authority back?? idk man

    2. why doesnt he (try to) get roy to eat his name as soon as he’s unsealed, and then just walk to the geyser without anyone chasing him?

when otto is using his divine protection to prevent them from sleeping, why don’t they fly on volcanica to get far away and then try sleeping? do they think that it has infinite range?

        1. he can just walk to the geyser without anyone chasing him because they dont know that he sealed Subaru
he won’t need his allies in this situation, no? he won’t have to fight anyone

          1. They still know that Subaru was sealed, so by moving earth and heaven around several places, they would inevitably end up finding him.

Also, they would know something happened related to Gluttony immediately after, there would be a whole lotta stuff that happened that would become contrived and make no sense without Al being there to cause it. We know that people can sense something being missing even after Gluttony eats someone’s name, so probably someone like Otto would instantly notice.

            1. yea they would (probably) know subaru was sealed, but if garfiel and ezzo (witnesses) were to look at al i don’t think they would know it was him who did it

cos when ricardo loses his arm protecting julius, and julius loses his name, ricardo doesn’t go “oh yeah i lost my arm protecting you” when julius tells him so, he doesn’t remember it happening.

also cmiiw but dont they only sense something when reminded about it? like there are events that become contrived and make no sense without rem being there to cause them that ram only finds odd when reminded by subaru
(like when he asks her about peeling potatoes or the dog mabeasts iiirc)
saying otto would clock instantly is glaze and goes against how gluttony is shown to work

      1. Also, I don’t think it would be any easier to sleep on a dragon’s back. And they don’t want to fly around with Volcanica to not earn unwarranted attention.

        1. volcanica has hands he could carry (a box made of stone containing) them in
also couldn’t volcanica fly above the clouds/very high to minimise the attention they get

          1. I don’t think that the Divine Dragon’s presence could be hidden even if they traveled all the way to the moon. A skilled magician would still sense it, due to the absurd amount of mana dragon’s hold.

And I was not talking about the back being uncomfortable, but about the stability of the flight: dragons are not known for being able to fly smoothly, Volcanica doesn’t do that precisely, much less considering he was brainwashed by Al, so his dexterity would suck and it would be like sleeping on top of a rollercoaster.

    3. The quote says that it works on anyone who was granted a power by a witch factor. As seen with the witch’s, losing one’s witch factor does not remove your authority. Now as for which witch factor Al must have had we don’t know, nor what condition must be met to use a authority without a witch factor.

      1. Fake reader alert. He never had a WF, he had a “half working authority” which he inherited from his parents. Like how Echidna probably never had a WF but was born a witch with an authority.

      2. but from chapter 12

“In the midst of the battle against the Great Disaster, he had tried to use it as a trump card against Sphinx, who had proclaimed herself a Witch, but there had been an issue stemming from Sphinx’s end―― due to the absence of a Witch Factor, it had been unable to display its true specialty.”

does the last bit not mean that the target actively needs to have a witch factor for it to properly work? or can i not read lol

        1. To be blunt you can’t read: Al still used it on sphinx Ol shamak was the thing she was physically restrained by when Subaru and Louis invaded her soul to wipe it that just wasn’t as powerful as it should have been (sphinx could still speak and move) because she didn’t have a witchfactor or authority at all

      3. k i went back to chapter 55 and it says al’s authority was linked to a witch factor (but he never had one) so ur right
ironically doesnt change very much though

    4. Because the author won’t let him win. A lot of strange things occurred during this arc. The Black Serpent, Roy, and Al all should not have lost.

  10. So Tappei just flushed 50 or something chapters down the toilet and for what exactly? Al doesn’t even know how he got defeated and they never got to talk and have a heart to heart in the end, so we learned nothing basically, Subaru just offs himself immediately with Rem killing him immediately on his signal not knowing where his restart point would be, conveniently he learns the spell that was used on him while he was in AL stomach btw and traps Al, Beatrice not even questioning him and voila, Like what was this Arc even all about? All that development was completely pointless in the end. I’m so confused by far the weirdest conclusion to any Arc so far imo. Tappei is really starting to lose me now fr

      1. Yeah, no reason. Nothing spells “no reason” better than half a hundred people being crippled, the Divine Dragon being permanently weakened and brainwashed, destroying the covenant and a good amount of people without memories, plus a vegetable (Petra).

    1. It’s almost like I don’t know, the whole story is about dying and going back in time to redo things.

    2. last time i checked this story had something to do with i don’t know, maybe going back in time to change the future and prevent as much damage as possible?

      1. Why did you post two replies with matching wording, but with different names? “Big black man”, “bald martin”

        1. No, it’s when a character wins against impossible odds for no good reason. This isn’t a Jujutsu Kaisen discussion.

          1. Odds are unrelated to plot armor, plot armor strictly happens when consistency of the story is breached.

So far, your argument for plot armor is “plot armor is when a character I don’t want to win wins”

You haven’t given any actual argument.

    3. Subaru suddenly acting strange and knowing things he should not is nothing new for the Beatrice, as well as going along with. Moreover, i’m ~90% sure that she both know that this is a result of his authority, and that him being unable to discuss it is one of the rules connected to the said authority.

      1. I really hope we still get some characters realizing Subaru has RBD and that it actually gets discussed. Subaru obviously can’t talk about it, but it seems like people can come to that conclusion and the Witch won’t break free. W/MemRem gets to that idea with a few prods in the right direction, at least.

    4. His authority was sealed, so his checkpoint couldn’t have updated inside the ball. It was obviously gonna be set several days ago. And Beatrice decodified that spell for 3 entire days.

Character development is not deleted, again, learn the difference between character development and character growth/evolution.

  11. Not really sure why this reset ending is getting so much hate. A lot of the draw for the series has been us getting to see many facets of the characters in different situations, situations that would normally be completely irredeemable and unrecoverable if not for RBD’s resetting, which is what gives the characters a lot more depth than if they just showed what happens only in the “canon” timeline.

All the ASPECTS of the characters that were revealed are still present, whether or not the SITUATIONS that revealed those aspects stayed as part of the “canon” timeline. You understand more about the characters and the world now. That’s what makes this series so good.

    1. (had to bleed this into the replies since I ran out of character count lmao)
The fact that Subaru is the only one who has memories of these alternate timelines is part of the more psychological horror-ish aspect of the work. It’s even explicitly mentioned in the work how unbelievably lonely and soul-crushing it is to be the only one with those memories and being unable to talk about them, like when Subaru broke down sobbing in Arc 4 when Dreamchidna told him that she shares in those memories, since he finally had SOMEONE he could talk to about them.

  12. This reminds me of that scene in Steins;Gate where Mayuri and the MC (I’m paraphrasing here) are talking about the hypothetical of the MC having time travel powers, and the topic of “thinking of all the conversations that Hypothetical-Mayuri and the MC had that only the MC got to remember makes me sad.”, and the MC replies “what, sad for Mayuri (who doesn’t remember any of the conversations)?”, and Mayuri hits him with “no, sad for the MC (who is the ONLY one who remembers).”.
That scene hit SO hard, and I think this arc’s ending is the absolute epitome of that.

It’s fine if you’re personally not into that kind of story/theme, but this theme has been present from the start…? It’s just a little strange to me how much hate this ending is getting, ATP in the story.

  13. WOW I truly did not believe the “great reset theory” would occur, but at the same time, I couldn’t imagine how the arc would end if not like that.
That was splendid, I loved this arc, I think it is my second favourite, close after the arc 6.

Thx for the translation, again I cannot believe so much is being translated that quickly ! 3 chapters in ONE DAY ! Amazing !

  14. Man I’m sad for Al. I like rooting for the underdog but unfortunately for plot reasons he had to lose. All could be avoided if he just offed Rom… My wish is for him to find peace and that oldman daddy Subaru with the hero complex does not save him. Don’t know what happened between them yet but obviously he is going to suffer more because of Subaru. Hopefully he will find some solace in solitude inside the orb.

  15. So Al’s job is stopping the birth of the witch who will destroy the world? And that witch will be born from Subaru’s love.

We can rule out Satella. She can’t be “born” because she’s already a witch. My guess it’s Emilia. Explains why putting Priscilla in the throne would prevent it from happening. Emilia becoming queen somehow makes her into the Witch.

Killing Satella, making Priscilla Queen, and removing Natsuki Subaru any of these three would have stopped the witch from being born.

    1. My guess: Emilia has to be queen to become the witch so Priscilla being queen stops this.

Emilia needs Subaru to win the throne since he can fight fate, so removing him stops this.

Killing Satella would make it so that Subaru doesn’t gave lovefilled RBD so he can’t fight fate

  16. Subaru shouted “Rem!!” obviously because he wanted her to kill him, I mean why else would he? Rem and Petra slander is just so stupid.

It was obvious for Petra who knew Subaru well and read his BOTD that Subaru will immediately try to die, so why not stage everything to prevent him from suffering if his checkpoint will get updated or someone from trying to stop him, like Emilia, or worse, Felix?

His shout was an obvious “I’m okay with it” signal, so saying that these two just used Subaru’s life without his consent is just wrong.

    1. Rem didn’t do anything before he asked and he clearly was aware of everything that is happening and their plan too. In this chapter at least it becomes clear that he knew, like if he knows about Petra’s sacrifices, he clearly should know that she’s planning to kill him.

Petra, knowing her, considered the possibility of checkpoint being set after unsealing, so she won’t be so stupid to just plan killing him without any agreement. She won’t risk trapping her love inside infinite loop she literally JUST experienced herself.

I know, this is not the most satisfying end, But Petra and Rem did nothing wrong here.

  17. Good to see Subaru back in action. Very good to see Petra not being crippled for life. The knowledge Subaru holds about the reset world seems a bit excessive, unless Cor Leonis got a VERY big upgrade in the meantime, and/or Petra managed to invoke compression even without memories at the perfect timing.

I have mixed feelings about this arc, but I can’t deny that it had its hype moments.

  18. It’s already been clear Fate is some sort of game here and the world is always in a cycle (stated by Merakuera) . Remember Subaru was considered as “secondary damage” and Emilia is likely the Witch of Kingdom or second coming of Great calamity. I guess if she succeeds then the world will be destroyed or if she get halted, it’d still be an inevitable as another candidate (“fourth damage”?) would emerge.

Now I have to mention that Stride said that Volcanica is an Observer and it’s confirmed dragons at some point fly away beyond the Great Waterfall. Anyways the thing is that, he saw Felt as Farsale and mistook Emilia as Satella. I think since he’s an Observer of sort, he can see their characteristic of Fate

  19. I personally love the comment section and read views and opinoins its like reading another chapter lol.

I will say google translate did an ok job however the translators deserve alot for doing such an amazing job!!!!!!!!

  20. Best possible ending for the worst arc, seems like Tappei is stirring away from the dark fantasy, gritty and gloomy story, and is adapting a shonen mindset.

It saddens me that Rem won’t come back yet, but Subaru should know that Roy’s next vomit is Rem’s memories.

Horrid Arc7/8, and Arc 9 should have been a what IF story, if Al had his way.

    1. Roy chose to vomit Rem’s memories due to the circumstances him and Al were in. So no Roy’s next vomit is not Rem’s memories…

  21. Ok Subaru back everything reset and he Ol Shamak’d Al before he got Ol Shamak’d.

Through this, everything that happened previously never happen because of RBD and Subaru after getting group hug with a bunch of Lolis + Garf, say he’ll save even Al too. I mean technically because of RBD Al hasn’t done anything yet. Petra hasn’t become a witch etc.

I knew this was going to happen probably and still not sure how to feel about it, but at least Subaru finally said he’s not ok.

Also though how did Subaru know everything that happened while he was sealed and inside of Al’s stomach? Beatrice, while sealed with him also figured out Ol Shamak so Subaru could cast it when he RBD.

    1. Also Subaru knowing Ol Shamak now…means he’s got hell of a trump card against witches/sin archbishops. Like Capella immortality cool, let me just seal you forever and maybe toss you down the geyser or great water fall. Subaru already overpowered with RBD now with Ol Shamak and Beako he legit could beat like all the sin archbishops one on one. Just needs to catch them once and they’re done.

  22. With the reset, I do love how innovative/experiment Tappei is with Rbd. Though I am very curious how it’ll align with what’s coming up and what all it has forshadowed or what not, because although it reset, Subaru path here is not going to align with what happened before at all obviously. I wonder if we’ll ever get like a trope of Subaru being stuck somewhere for Years due to a decision, then can’t die so he reset after a bunch of years, and then his literally can’t fumble or he’ll repeat being “locked up” for years.

It is going to feel so weird now switching from Aldabaran to Subaru now. After experiencing Aldabran rbding SO often. It’s going to make Subaru’s rbd feel weird.
