Cut Content

Quicklinks

[Season 1] [OVAs] [Season 2] [Season 3]

This page is intended to serve as a repository of relatively important cut content that might affect your enjoyment of the series if you decide to pick up either the Web Novel or the Light Novel. It uses the Anime as a reference, so it is ideal for Anime watchers.

This page has been sectioned into Seasons (including OVAs as if they were a Season), then further subdivided into Episodes. That way it will be easier to relate the content with what you’ve seen in the Anime.

Each piece of cut content is organized in the following manner:

Short description – How important it is (in a number from 1 to 4) (press to open)

More detailed description of the scene and its important elements.

Location of this information in both the Web Novel (Arc X Chapter Y format) and Light Novel (Volume X Chapter Y Section Z format)

Ranking how important the information/scene is has been done using the following criteria:

  • Not really important (1) – Not very important to the overall story, plot or lore, usually just neat character moments.
  • Relatively important (2) – Might be important to the story, plot or lore, but its significance is unclear. Alternatively, the significance of the content may be clear, but it is neither high nor low.
  • Important (3) – Important content to the story, plot or lore, that will aid you in case you decide to join theory discussions about Novels content. However, if you are only here for the story, it might be unnecessary.
  • Very important/Mandatory (4) – Very important content, which is referenced again in later Arcs. You will be confused further down the line without this knowledge. If you only care about not being confused later in the story, look out only for these.

Puck shows himself in the Royal Castle – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

The part with the Candidates’ speeches leading up to Subaru’s freak-out is very different. The candidates have lengthier speeches, lending them a bit more depth and characterization. But the important part is when Emilia assumes the forefront. After she is denounced as a silver-haired half-elf, Roswaal goes with the flow and publicly takes a massive dump on her by saying that it doesn’t matter if she’s suitable for a Candidate or not; they just needed five people recognized by the Insignia. Subaru is triggered by this, and after he doesn’t stand down, Roswaal launches an Al Goa at him. However, Puck protects him and threatens everyone in the room with his Ice magic, at which point he’s recognized as the Beast of the End (translated as “Apocalypse Beast of Eternal Frost” in the official translation). Miktolov then realizes that it was all a sham planned by Roswaal and Puck to show that albeit Emilia holds the power to kill everyone in the room, acting as the tyrant they make her out to be for being an half-elf, she is not such a thing, and that she wishes to compete fair and square.

After Subaru is knocked out and brought outside by Al, there is a short exchange where Al calls Rem by Ram’s name, Rem clarifies that Ram is her sister, Al asks if her sister is still alive, to which Rem answers yes, and Al suddenly projects a ghastly aura, which shock Rem and Subaru both. After some quips, Petelgeuse mentions that for a Spirit, Puck is quite human-like (in demeanor), to which Puck replies that despite his apperance, his limbs used to be longer, and his face more handsome.

There is a short talk between Emilia and Subaru after the latter has gotten his qualifications revoked by Echidna. In it, Subaru attempts once again to be straight-forward and reveal his intention to shield Emilia from pain by taking the Trials in her stead, but Emilia rejects it wholly, arguing that she too needs to do something rather than have Subaru do everything in her stead, making Subaru realize that he had been the first person to not believe in her ability to pass the Trial.

At the end of the Trial, Echidna mentions knowing Emilia’s mother, implying that she was “pushy, complacent, hubristic, egotistic and hypocritical”, and that she had a sort of jealousy described as “why is it always you…?” by Echidna. The original wording in Japanese is not very clear.

However, she hesitates for a moment, saying that it may not be strictly correct.

Emilia had never looked at her own reflection for fear of her own looks – Not really important (1) [press to expand]

It is made clearer that Emilia rejected looking at herself in the mirror (or any mirror surface really) because of her appearance after waking up from the ice, partly because, in her consciousness, she had grown from a child to an adult in a flash. In fact, to protect her, one of the clauses in the contract she had with Puck was that she would not look at her own reflection.

There is more to the Third Trial than shown in the Anime – Important (3) [press to expand]

The Third Trial lines were, for the most part, compressed in comparison to the original ones in the WN and LN, with the visuals for one scene being missing as well. You can find the WN version of these lines, as well as an analysis, in the spreadsheet found here, in the sheet named “Third Trial Quotes”.

One of the Third Trial lines was changed in the LN and Anime, in comparison to the WN – Important (3) [press to expand]

Instead of “You have bent your knees before irresistible despair, and you have lost even your sword… Just what is it you still cling to?” (as translated by YenPress, although this person is likely referring to themselves and not a second person), and instead of “If I bend my knee and lose my sword, what is left for me?” (as translated by Crunchyroll in the Anime’s subtitltes), in the WN the line was “There are feelings which must not be spoken. Does it satisfy you, now that they have come to light?”.

Emilia originally met Sekhmet after the Third Trial – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

Originally, the Witch that Emilia would meet after the Third Trial was Sekhmet, not Minerva. However, Sekhmet mentions knowing Emilia’s mother, saying that much like Emilia’s mother, Emilia is “not timid during the critical moments”. Incidentally, Sekhmet mentions Minerva by name as the one other Witch Emilia could manage to converse with, but also that Minerva cannot show her face to Emilia. The name Minerva brings strong feelings, particularly one of nostalgia, to Emilia. Narration mentions that it is a name that “could evoke thoughts of someone very close to her”.

Something protects Subaru from being consumed by the flames – Relatively important (2) [press to expand]

After being rejected by Beatrice and sent back to the entrance of the mansion, Subaru rushes back into the mansion. He feels something wrong squirming inside him, yet not being able to focus on it because of the pain of the burns; narration mentions that were he able to witness what was happening, his body wrapped in a mass of black Miasma like a protective cloak of shadows, he would recoil from how repulsive it was.

Od Lagna, one of the key mechanics of the world, is theorized in-universe to be bestowing Divine Protections and controlling people’s use of magic – Not really important (1) [press to expand]

Roswaal explains (to Subaru) one of the key mechanics of the world: Od Lagna, a stockpile of Mana at the core of the world. Roswaal explains that people who tested different approaches and methods to the use of Mana, such that would reach new heights of magic and rewrite the very practice’s history, would witness Od Lagna, a mass of power much vaster than the Mana they had manipulated before, and get their mind broken. Roswaal implies that his goal of ressurrecting Echidna would normally result in the same thing, but he knows of a way to reunite with Echidna without displeasing Od Lagna. He also mentions an in-world theory that Od Lagna is a consciousness ruling over everything in the world, and that it bestows Divine Protections upon people. Roswaal also mentions that it would be likely that Subaru’s manner of redoing things could potentially displease Od Lagna.

The Ryuzu Meyer crystal is gone in the final loop, which has some implications – Relatively important (2) [press to expand]

Technically this also occurs in the Light Novel and Anime both, but given that the crystal disappearing is shown to the reader/watcher, it is not framed as a mystery. >!In the Web Novel, however, the crystal’s disappearance seems to hold some significance. When Subaru and Beatrice go to visit the crystal and the original Ryuzu Meyer there-in contained, they find the crystal gone, with the same bottomless hole from the second loop in its stead. Subaru is left wondering about the culprit, deducing they had been waiting for the barrier to be broken before using the passage the hole provided and nabbing the crystal.

Beatrice has nearly no Mana left, and Subaru cannot provide her with a lot of it, meaning they are nearly-powerless in battle – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

The circumstances of Beatrice and Subaru’s contract, explained after the battle against the Great Rabbit, are skipped over in the Anime. It is confirmed that Subaru’s gate is broken, and for that reason their contract is necessary so Subaru does not die for being unable to expel Mana. Furthermore, Subaru must be exclusively contracted with Beatrice. However, as a consequence of the fight against the Great Rabbit, Beatrice has spent the Mana she had passively amassed from the people inside the mansion over four-hundred-years, and what Subaru is able to provide her with is a mere pittance.

Roswaal threatens Subaru that if anyone Subaru chose to protect dies, he will kill the rest – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

More of a clarification because of the faulty CR subs, but on the final episode, what Roswaal speaks to Subaru is a threat: if anyone that Subaru has resolved to protect dies, Roswaal would kill the survivors, and then would be killed by the curse he planted on himself due to the contract-slash-bet with Subaru.

Roswaal hired Elsa, but not Meili – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

At the banquet after the Knighting Ceremony, Subaru and Emilia talk about the Trials and her goal – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

The talk that was assumedly mentioned in the Anime and LN, and skipped over, is believed to be this talk that happened on-screen in the WN. In it, after grabbing Subaru close, speaks about her past, of having lived in Elior with her adoptive mother Fortuna and the other elves, of the Witch Cult’s assistance, and also the event that led to the Forest freezing over, triggered by Pandora, the Archbishop and the Black Serpent. However, all of this is in narration, and given later events it is unclear just how much details Emilia gave to Subaru regarding the Witch Cult, Juice, and the Black Serpent. It is also mentioned that Puck is asleep inside the crystal, because otherwise the crystal would not be able to contain him, and that one of higher grade is necessary for Puck to wake up. Moving on to Roswaal’s appearance, Emilia was lured by Roswaal’s proposal for melting the forest, as despite the fact it was frozen over by her power, she cannot unfreeze it for being unable to reach the same level of power from her memories. And Roswaal’s proposal was to use the miracle-performing Blood of the Dragon. Subaru is confused that it means killing the Dragon Volcanica, which would mean releasing Satella’s seal, but Emilia corrects him that only one drop of blood is needed, and that the Blood of the Dragon has been kept in the Royal Castle since the time the Covenant was forged. This is yet another reason as to why Emilia feels her motivation is selfish.

The Advent, an extra scene after the Knighting – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

Season 3

Episode 1

Deeper ties between the Astrea Family drama and the Royal kidnapping – Very important/Mandatory (3) [press to expand]

When giving Subaru the exposition regarding the kidnapped Royal Family member, Julius gives more of an insight into the dynamics of the Astrea Family, in particular that Reinhard was extremely attached to his father Heinkel as a kid, beyond a normal father-son relationship. Plus, he speculates that to prevent Reinhard from turning against the Kingdom, Heinkel was shown favor. And this is particularly important, because Heinkel was suspected of being involved with the abduction of the Royal Family member 15 years ago, making it so he was suspected of the very action that led to his mother dying against the White Whale, and the crux of Wilhelm’s past regrets.

The Witch’s Remains do not exist in the Web Novel – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

Basically what it says on the tin. The Witch’s Remains subplot (and therefore the Council of Ten’s existence) does not exist in the Web Novel version of the Arc whatsoever. Obviously, Kiritaka, a member of said council, still exists. In its stead, the Witch Cult demands “20 couples who really love one another” to be delivered, claiming they would not be harmed.

Big reveal regarding the Artificial Spirit demand (Cour 2 spoiler, read only if planning to read the WEB NOVEL) – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

It is highly recommended that you read the relevant chapters themselves (here and here) because of the amount of details. But to summarize, in the Web Novel, shortly after Subaru wakes up from the failed attack on the City Hall, Anastasia has a solo talk with Subaru. Shortly after, the fox scarf she wears starts talking, and reveals itself to be an Artificial Spirit named Echidna. This confuses Subaru who assumes it is the real Echidna from the Sanctuary, but that is not the case. This Echidna (often called Scarfdona or Eridna in the community) states to have no memories aside from her own name, not even memories of her creator, and also claims that she cannot forge Contracts with people. Either way, because of this, it is unclear whether the demand is meant for Beatrice, Eridna, or both.

Details on which demand pertains to which Archbishop – Relatively important (2) [press to expand]

In the Web Novel, Anastasia explains which demand corresponds to which Archbishop. Lust demanded the 20 couples who love one another, Wrath demanded the Book of Wisdom, Gluttony demanded the Artificial Spirit, and Greed demanded the non-interference in his wedding. As Lust’s demand was changed in the Light Novel, it is assumed that in the Light Novel, she is the one demanding the Witch’s Remains held in the city.

Otto does not meet Ley Batenkaitos in the Web Novel nor the Light Novel – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

In the novels, rather than encountering Ley Batenkaitos, Otto instead meets Roy Alphard. However, when relaying the story of him running into Gluttony, his description avoids mentioning the name, and is just vague enough for Subaru to believe he came to face the same Archbishop of Gluttony he met, Roy Alphard.

An extra scene concurrent to the end of the episode – Very important/Mandatory (4) [press to expand]

There is one last scene in Light Novel Volume 18 just after Season 3 Episode 8 leaves off for the Cour 1 break. It will assuredly be adapted in the future, but it is an important one for continuity’s sake. If you are planning on reading the Light Novel from Episode 8 onwards, you can find a translation of the WN version of this scene here, so that you do not have to get Volume 18 for a single scene. If you are planning on reading the Web Novel, it is not necessary to read this. If you are planning on waiting until February for Episode 9, then you can rest assured, as it will surely be adapted eventually.
