???: [――Just like you, I’m a complete failure of a girl.]
Thus hearing the Witch’s words, spoken with downcast eyes framed by long lashes, Aldebaran became unsure of what to say, merely sinking into silence.
The grassland upon which Aldebaran’s trysts with the Witch occurred repeatedly without fail, that place which did not exist anywhere in this world, was an alternate dimension created by the Witch, one which could be called a castle of fantasies.
Even when he did inquire about its nature, she would invariably attempt to deceive him by saying “It’s something like a dream when you doze off”; upon that grassland, on this day―― night had fallen, unusually.
Aldebaran: [I guess even unusual things can happen.]
As the star-studded black sky looked down upon him, Aldebaran sighed in wonder.
On a fundamental level, the time of the grassland was fixed at midday. Given that this place was merely a landscape envisioned by its creator, the Witch, it was divorced from notions of true time. Hence, the plains were always bright, and decorated by clear skies.
Albeit the topical person required not any colors aside from black and white, were they truly the possessor of such unexpectedly high spirits that a patch of bright, blue sky would peek out of their heart of hearts, without fail?
Yet despite the matter of him harboring such doubts, he had been surprised by night falling upon the meadow nonetheless. To say nothing of the fact that the Witch in question was dozing off atop the hill.
Witch: [――――]
Her upper body resting upon the white table, the Witch took muted, sleeping breaths.
As Aldebaran was to inquire on the topic of the unfamiliar nighttime scenery, upon realizing her slumber, he bated his breath, fixedly gazing at the Witch’s sleeping face.
His initial impression, was that of thinking “the Witch also sleeps, eh”.
Obvious though it might have been, that was the extent to which the Witch’s manner of life was an enigma. She was a being who could create something like an alternate dimension at will, so if it happened that she did not sleep, he would not have been surprised. In fact, until the present day, not once had he borne witness to her sleeping visage.
Aldebaran: [She’s infuriatingly beautiful…]
It was something he had known, but even when asleep, she possessed abnormally prominent beauty.
The almond-shaped eyes housing unparalleled knowledge and curiosity were closed, but her facial features had likely taken God quite a bit of time to tune to perfection, and her long, beautiful white hair and seemingly faded white skin seemed to declare that no other color needed be made known to the world. ――It truly infuriated him.
Aldebaran: [Thinking about it, this is a rare opportunity, I should hurry and grab something to scribble on her face――]
Witch: [――Uh.]
Aldebaran: [――Hk!]
As soon as he thought to do something rude, a faint noise escaped the lips, causing Aldebaran to stiffen.
Despite not having done anything, he felt like a child whose mischief was being reprimanded. However, in the next moment, the tension in Aldebaran’s body would break his personal record.
――After all, in the eyes of the dozing Witch, he caught a faint glimpse of a teardrop.
Aldebaran: [Teacher――]
Witch: [――Mph.]
Unconsciously, Aldebaran touched the shoulder of the sleeping Witch, and shook her body. With a faint groan at the call and the touch to her shoulder, closed eyelids slowly opened.
As if to ascertain, those black eyes blinked several times, and reflected Aldebaran right before her,
Witch: […Aldebaran?]
Aldebaran: [Ah, yeah, that’s right, Teacher. It ain’t like yourself to be taking a snooze out here.]
Witch: [――――]
Before Aldebaran as he concealed his discomposure, the Witch silently got up. Placing her slender fingers to her jaw, the awakening Witch contemplated the situation.
And then――,
Witch: [――A dream, was it.]
The fact that it had been so was unfortunate; such was the nuance carried by the mutter.
After muttering, the Witch wiped away the tears in her eyes with her fingers, clearing away the aftertaste of slumber. At that nonchalant gesture, Aldebaran felt a strange sense of loneliness.
Thus, he unconsciously ended up asking about it.
Aldebaran: [To cry while dreaming, you a kid or something? ――What sort of dream, was it?]
So he spoke.
Witch: [――――]
Aldebaran fell silent at the awkwardness, painfully regretting his question.
In all honesty, he had envisioned being bombarded with a great amount of knowledge regarding dreams, or to be poked fun at, teased for expressing interest in the Witch’s dream; the usual progression.
But, to Aldebaran’s question, the Witch did not respond with the usual progression.
Instead, presented as an answer was the Witch’s comment from the beginning.
???: [――Just like you, I’m a complete failure of a girl.]
Aldebaran: [――――]
Ruminating over the Witch’s words once more, Aldebaran reached the extremities of confusion amidst the silence.
Just what on earth had she meant? Did she not care about being posed a direct question such as this? Even though she would usually blather on and on without end continuously, what was the reason behind her being so well-mannered right now?
――Even supposing he did enquire it, and ascertain it, would the Witch remain unharmed?
Witch: […Good grief, just which one of us is the child?]
Aldebaran: [Huh…]
Witch: [You said that I’d become so small, that I was just like a kid. Worry not, I am not some cute existence capable of being hurt by you. ――I am a wicked Witch, you know?]
Closing one eye in a wink, the Witch voiced her same old line. Witnessing a glimpse of her characteristic childishness therein, Aldebaran heaved a great sigh.
For some reason, it felt like there was no true lifelike feeling in it.
Aldebaran: [Shit, to be feeling this sorta way because of someone like Teacher…]
Witch: [How peculiar. As far as I know, “Teacher” is supposed to be a title of honor, and yet I cannot sense a shred of reverence. Even though you were just trying to hide your embarrassment at peeping at a maiden’s sleeping face.]
Aldebaran: [You go about these things way too maliciously!]
That he was on the verge of being traumatized, was Aldebaran’s protest, yet the Witch displayed zero concern regarding his complaints, tapping her finger on the table in good humor.
That instant, cups filled with tea manifested, one of them for Aldebaran.
Witch: [Come on now, cheer up. Should I take the trouble of producing confections as well?]
Aldebaran: [It’s fine. Even if I eat here it won’t fill my stomach, so when I return to the other side I’d be all jumbled up, feeling like I’m full while my actual body’s hungry.]
Witch: [When you say that, I just want you to eat even more.]
Aldebaran: [You’re the worst!]
Shouting at the Witch who did not conceal even a shred of her impishness, Aldebaran rested his chin in his palm. Then, stealing a glance at the gleeful Witch, he ascertained that any traces of tears were nowhere to be found.
Aldebaran: [――――]
The teardrops had vanished. And yet, an unfading lump lingered in Aldebaran’s chest.
That which the Witch had said was a joke, was likely no such thing, but the truth. ――Even she, beautiful and wise as she was, would have times where she cursed herself, and wanted to cry.
Just who in the world could see the Witch as a failed existence?
Witch: [Hm?]
Aldebaran: [――. It’s nothing, sleepyhead Teacher.]
Directing insults at the Witch tilting her head devoid of malice, Aldebaran brought the cup to his mouth.
Likely, he had missed his opportunity. A chance to question her on that very thing, would it ever come around again? Supposing it did, would Aldebaran wish to know the answer?
If he did wish to know, would the reason be because he sought sympathy or compassion?
Or perhaps――,
Aldebaran: [――Even a fake starry sky’s still quite the wonder to behold, yeah?]
Was his wish perhaps to have those black eyes, which albeit bore a jet-black hue selfsame to that of the starry sky, appeared to dazzle even more than the latter, turn towards his own self?
Aldebaran, who was the same as the Witch in being a failed existence, knew not.
Literally looks identical, I’m shook
He def stole his clothes and copied his haircut ngl
Bruh
It is fanart though, right?
no. its official
It’s official but the official illustrator has gone off script before (regulus was supposed to have darker clothes in his appearances going off tappeis descriptions but never once did)
This is far too much of a resemblance to be a mistake or the illustrator going off script
no
Good stuff. I’ve got a feeling Echidna will once again become best girl in the next few arcs
“Once again”. You made me chuckle.
I suggest you drown yourself, I like Echidna and Aldebaran =) In general, this Echidna is neutral, and there are many worse people in ReZero. The worst people are probably Capella and Satella.
I’m genuinely curious about Echidna and Aldebaran at this point.
Is Echidna pulling the threads behind everything? If so, to what end?
Al is almost certainly largely her pawn, and knowingly so. Roswaal thought he would have a relationship with her or something, and so followed her instructions via the book, manipulating still others. Sphinx was her creation. And there’s a possibility she is at least complicit in the instructions to the sin archbishops.
But it could also be plans from Flugel, or something laid out by Volcanica. Maybe even Satella.
What? She’s not a god, dude. Echidna does not send instructions to Roswaal and the archbishops. Echidna did not plan Sphinx’s actions. This Echidna didn’t even meet with Roswaal and Sphinx. Satella? She’s the craziest character in ReZero even without WoE. She can only talk to Subaru and only about love. She definitely doesn’t have any plans. I also wonder why she needs Al, and with whom she made this decision. I’m inclined to believe that she single-handedly decided to prepare Al, and that this would somehow awaken Volcanica. It’s the goal. And then he would stop Al.
“I’m inclined to believe that she single-handedly decided to prepare Al”
Nah this isn’t just Echidna’s decision. She mentions in NO STELLA NO LIFE that her training Al was a duty entrusted to her by “those guys” and her friends. Al is a part of a larger conspiracy decided 400 years ago
Maybe, but she could be lying. There is no proof or refutation here. But I am absolutely sure that the goal is false. I remember the scene after Subaru left the tea party, where Echidna and Minerva said they wished Subaru well.
We are talking about a witch that capable of predict 400 years into the future and write it all into a book yea? I say calling her omniscient and the mastermind is not exaggerated here
Echidna’s list of mistakes: She tried to help every person in the world, but she failed and began to lose her humanity and go mad. Her first team disintegrated. Her witch friends died. Her best friend went mad and tried to destroy the world. Her apprentice, Al, failed to meet her expectations and failed the mission. Hector arrived at the Sanctuary before she was ready. She was sealed by Volcanica. Emilia passed the trials, but Echidna was convinced that it was impossible. In this chapter, she cries and calls herself a failure. Everything is according to her plans, yes.
considering the gospels and the tomes of wisdom are related i don’t think you can definitively say echidna has nothing to do with it
I wish he should give more clues and unravel the 400 years old mystery
She is a witch but she is open of being monstrous unlike other characters and say what you will she helped subaru in arc 4.
If you hate Aldebaran then you should love Echidna for killing him like a bajillion times as part of his training
60001, isn’t it?
True. Emilia is the embodiment of a female gorilla in anime form. A piece of worthless turd only there to mindlessly fight. The bitch should be put 6 feet under cause she doesn’t deserve any development at all.
You forgot to mention that she also smiles sweetly. Smiling and awkwardly waving her arms, defeating enemies with great innate strength. The recipe for a good character from Tappei. Lugunica should hope for Emilia’s defeat in the Royal Selection, and the readers for her development. Lugunica will probably get lucky, and the readers will not.
How inelegant, man. All this because one of the characters doesn’t get any affectionate attention? If you haven’t noticed anything special about Emilia by now, it’s your moral obligation to stop reading Re:zero. Stupidity is contagious.
I suppose its referring to Dream Dona being a failed, emotionless version of the original Echidona. Being more “witch” like than her original self. Any clues gang?
oh hmmm idk i actually have no idea what this chapter could mean, i never really thought echidna and dreamchidna were different people yk, but it makes sense and tappei is always unpredictable
It was said at least twice in the 4th arc in WN that Echidna from Castle of Dreams is a clone. Al=Subaru was absolutely predictable. I don’t think this Echidna is defective and insensitive compared to the original. This is the second time we’ve seen her cry. Most likely, the original Echidna copied herself into this one at a time when she was at the lowest moral point in her life.
But if that last bit would be true, why would Roswaal hate on Trial-Echidna?
That would mean he doesn’t know.
It doesn’t say anywhere that he hates her. It says that he and Beatrice don’t care about her.
I hate the fact that they look so similar. Just think its bad either way, he beeing subaru/clone or not
The signs were all there yet we still ignored the obvious. Bravo Tappei
Its not that people didn’t expect this people were just hopin it wouldn’t be this ass. “Bravo tappei” like cmon dude barely remembers the stuff he writes
Aldebaran still isn’t Subaru. Sure, they look similar, but that doesn’t automatically mean one is a clone of the other. Could have something to do with the world itself.
Wtf you talking about? People have been claiming Subaru = Al for eons because of all of the shining bright signs Tappei has lit along the way. It’s because of that, that I feel we’re being baited into believing it.
Yup, that’s exactly right, random person who can’t into sarcasm.
Correct me if I’m wrong but for all we knew before this chapter, Al could have known Echidna when she was alive, but this confirms he went to the Sanctuary and tried to solve the trials? maybe? He also mentioned his real body so it could really be the sanctuary, but if we go by his word and believe he was isekaied like 20 years before Subaru (i dont remember the exact time) wouldn’t Ryuzu and the rest of the Sanctuary people know him, maybe even Roswaal. This is so fishy I’m starting to believe in different timelines at this point
I think she summoned his soul directly from the Island of Gladiators at night.
Hey guys do you know if arc 9 is currently in hiatus? I heard Jakez say that but im not sure, I can’t wait for more chapters
It’s not in hiatus, Tappei takes breaks in between volumes and next volume is out in september, so the next chapters will probably start coming out in July probably
Jakez has a higher digit count than IQ… Don’t trust him for any legitimate info
I nutted to this one
Yeah same here
So Aldebaran is a copy of Subaru’s soul, I wonder if it’s a similar situation to sphinx where the vessel doesn’t match the soul. Him looking like Subaru in this prologue could be caused by Al being inside the “castle of fantasies”.
Touch grass. Why are you so angry?
WHAT THE FUCK
no seriously WHAT!?!?!?!??!?!?!
did you like, miss all of the messages and plot of re zero?
miss that women are people? That the characters are more than their relationships, than being ‘hot’?
fuck that shit, re zero is not about fucking gooning over it’s characters. please stop it. i’m probably overreacting but I’m tired of people in these comment sections just begin weird AF about female characters and calling people and the author slurs over stupid shit.
Bro, teppei is a hypocrite. The women should be viewed as women, yet the mc is treated anything but an ACTUAL HUMAN BEING! The same women who try to drug him, yell at him for being a victim of others bullshit, manipulate him, gaslight him, insult him, and have his accolades downplayed to high heaven, meanwhile they get away with it while suffering NO CONSEQUENCES FOR IT!
Why should we treat these females when the author doesn’t treat his mc as a fucking human being?
One of the messages of the author wanted to communicate was that women were people? I missed that ,what i got however is how much the author views his main character as a subhuman.
I agree however with how i or other people can’t stand see this much vitriol. If they don’t like it they should stop or at the very least stop with such comments.
It’s pretty clear that despite the unfair amounts of suffering Subaru goes through, it is not intended as justified. Subaru views some shit as a punishment, but his self harming and self punishing tendencies are NOT supposed to be a good thing. Arc 6 is a lot about expectations and how he’s grown and such, but it’s also about realizing his worth – that there isn’t some magic difference between Subaru and “Subaru” that let Subaru become someone “Subaru” thinks he could never be. Satella very explicitly wants Subaru to value himself so much more. Re Zero is a story that involves not valuing yourself, but I’m pretty sure Tappei does NOT want you to see Subaru as lesser or subhuman.
The vitriol in these comments really does suck, thank you for being cool.
Vollachia is saying that Subaru is pathetic and should suffer. He just ordered himself to be beaten for several days, and the narrative approved of it. He increased the pain of his suicides to suffer more, and the narrative approved of it. He thanked Rem for breaking his fingers and took care of the thing she used to torture him. The moral of the 4th arc, that Subaru should love himself, has been thrown away. Now Subaru should hate himself. His tendency to self-harm is now seen as a good thing.
The moral of the 4th arc, that Subaru should love himself, has been thrown away.
Basically. Not to mention, the message sucks ass because it tell Subaru to rely on his friends despite them being obstacles and make his life harder due to having their own agenda that goes against his.
Why the hell is SATELLA of all people preaching this lesson? She’s seen these people mistreat subaru. She should be livid and want them all to die for all the torment they caused subaru. Hell, the only allies he had are the ones he had to suffer inhumane agony in order to get on their good side.
part 2
Moreso, why the hell does satella want subaru to rely on others when the checkpoint updates with the possibility of subaru losing his comrades like rem? Doesn’t the checkpoints only prioritize subaru and fuck everyone else? Satella is a hypocrite.
> He thanked Rem for breaking his fingers and took care of the thing she used to torture him.
He never thanked Rem for breaking his fingers, looking back at it he sees it as a treasurable memory in the same way you would see an adoptive child breaking havoc in your house and growing out of it.
> Basically. Not to mention, the message sucks ass because it tell Subaru to rely on his friends despite them being obstacles and make his life harder due to having their own agenda that goes against his.
Not everyone will always be in your side or instantly agree with you. This is both true for real life and the story. That doesn’t mean it is okay to not rely on others, and when Subaru did rely on others his problems were practically instantly solved, like in arc 4 and arc 5.
> She should be livid and want them all to die for all the torment they caused subaru.
Satella is not as childish as WOE. She recognizes the value in saving them, since Subaru does so. And Subaru isn’t either as dumb as to be convinced by something as silly as this, because despite the pain they could have given him, he has explained each time the reasons for forgiving them: for Rem and Ram he said he was unwilling to throw away some of his past fond memories with them. With Garfiel he was able to empathize after hearing his story from Shima. With Meili he forgave her due to being a child with a bad reference.
etc…
> Vollachia is saying that Subaru is pathetic and should suffer. He just ordered himself to be beaten for several days, and the narrative approved of it
It didn’t happen for “several days”, and an event occuring doesn’t imply that the “narrative” considers it morally ok. This is the stupidest level of moral reductionism I’ve ever seen.
> He increased the pain of his suicides to suffer more, and the narrative approved of it.
***To avoid suicide more, since it is painful. Same mistake as the above too.
Tappei does NOT want you to see Subaru as lesser or subhuman.
BULLSHIT. The story belittles his achievements by acting like he doesn’t do a damn thing (otto), most of the characters blame subaru for shit that was beyond control, literally everyone treats him like dirt and gets away with it, and it’s even played for laughs
The story has what ifs that happen because subaru doesn’t submit to people who treat him like dirt. The story only works and is portrayed as good when nobody else BUT subaru is submissive
1) It has been confirmed. No surprise at all. No emotions. This has long been obvious to everyone except people who kiss Tappei’s ass. There were a lot of people on Reddit who wrote that he was a genius, and therefore the obvious option was wrong. 2) Echidna showed again how difficult and good a character (not person) she is. The best female character in ReZero. Some scenes with Echidna contain more depth than all the appearances of Tappei’s favorite gorilla doll for the 4th-9th arc combined. This is considering that we know very little about Echidna.
Mistake. 5-9.
good boy
I’ve never judged characters through sexual fantasies. But that’s literally Rem’s main purpose – to be a masturbation object for readers.
Pretty much
It makes me wish elsa was still here since her sexy is great to beat off to, but I guess teppei deemed her unworthy of living despite most of the heroines we’ve seen are on par with her resting behavior like ram, priscilla, (yes she died, but she went out as some heroic martyr) crusch, and many others
NO IT ISN’TTTTTTTT
SERIOUSLY WHAT THE HELL
stop. pls.
never judged characters through sexual fantasies my ass. please. y’know why i first grew attached to rem as a character? nothing to do with her interactions with subaru, but her backstory, her self-hatred stemming from that one moment where she felt relief over her sister losing her horn, and how she feels she needs to do everything she can to make up for that.
she’s great and relatable, and a good example of someone who can be there for others while never being there for herself – she can tell subaru to never give up, that he can be a hero, but well, ignore what he was actually saying to her that day – that she had the right to live and laugh as herself, not for her others(in that case, her sister).
She’s a waifu bait bait and an unrealistic plot device bro. Her speech shouldn’t have worked on subaru because it undermines the trauma he went through. Not to mention, from zero only existed because of poor writing. The crusch conversation was forced and only served as a means to get to from zero because teepei cares about the destination and how we got there
Shut the fuck up Erica
I don’t think it undermines his trauma at all. It’s not supposed to be a ‘wow, now Subaru is 100% better’ speech – it’s giving him hope to keep going despite the trauma, to believe that things can be better. That he improved her life, that he hasn’t ruined everything because right there in front of him, is someone who’s very glad he’s in their life. And Subaru doesn’t just get suddenly better, he spends the rest of the story again and again dealing with trauma and reaching points of almost giving up.
She’s a waifu bait bait and an unrealistic plot device bro. Her speech shouldn’t have worked on subaru because it undermines the trauma he went through, meaning he’s unrealistic as fuck. Not to mention, from zero only existed because of poor writing. The crusch conversation was forced and only served as a means to get to from zero because teepei cares about the destination and how we got there.
Rem is a good person? She tortured an innocent man for hours, while she smiled and joked. In another loop, she started torturing without even asking questions. WONDERFUL PERSON. Was there any punishment? At least a conviction? She received a lover and happiness in gratitude for the torture. And she became a slave with one thought – to serve Subaru and dream of his love. Before, her master was Ram. For fans of the boys who dream of a such Rem serving them. In Vollachia, she treats Subaru, who cares about her more than anyone, as the worst person in the world. The narrative approves of this. Subaru even thanks her for breaking his fingers. In this plot, Subaru is practically the only person for whom responsibility exists. His friends can burn down a kindergarten.
Most of these characters are good people because of subauru is an unrealistic protagonist. It’s basically plot armor because 100% of the human population irl wouldn’t get past arc 1 or arc 2 at best. Teppei writes this guy as a visual novel protagonist who gets all the bad endings before getting the good ending.
Part 1
Part 2
Not to mention writing a protagonist who never gives up which is seen as good or right, despite not being realistic since a normal human would try to find their way home or freak out when sent to a different world
Part 3
It also doesn’t work since the mc goes through an experience that no human has ever gone through: dying over and over again. The story only works and these characters are good is because subaru is unrealistic as fuck. Most of the stroy that does happen shouldn’t if he WAS
Idk why teppei loves to ignore her actions. Like you said, in arc 2, her actions are ignored by the plot and she gets rewarded for her actions. Even in vollachia. Teppei for some reason has always her allergic to consequences, like a lot of the females who are “heroines”.
Plot armor
I don’t think ReZero divides characters into good and bad based on gender. There are characters like Puck and Eugard who are very terrible person, but they are fully justified by the story without any reason (Puck) or with minimal reason (Eugard). Other characters love them. There is also Echidna, who is a definitely not good person but is better than them. However, the narrative regularly shows how terrible she is. Everyone hates her, and she hates herself.
>in arc 2, her actions are ignored by the plot and she gets rewarded for her actions.
Reading comprehension 0
>in arc 2, her actions are ignored by the plot and she gets rewarded for her actions.
Reading comprehension 0
Nice. Glad to see you agree since you have no argument to counter me
What argument, sorry? How are her actions ignored by the plot?
Suddenly lack of gruesome punishment means “ignored by the plot”… seriously, how old are you?
I thought your reading comprehension was 0 but its actually negative infinity.
What fucking reward did she get motherfucker? Lover? Not in a relationship.
Yes she is. Subaru agreed to have her be his second wife. Hell, he even confessed to her after the white whale battle
coma? 2 arc amnesia?
In which she abuses subaru and gets away with it AGAIN
So teppej brainwashed to only prioritize good over bad?
Even though arc 3 good actions in failed loops because of the ignored bad failed loops in arc 2
Now I’m even more convinced you’re just another double_test alt. Why the fuck do you want her to suffer for a totally justified action and what form of fucking punishment do you want it to be? Your fucking MC right after ep 15 held up a fucking spoon and tried to attack Crusch if she didn’t help him “kill every single one of those witch cultists”. A fucking SPOON.
What’s justified? Letting innocent people be slaughtered despite knowing the danger of the cult?
If subaru were to do the same, would you give him a free pass or not? If no, then you’re a hypocrite
Crusch can be justified if she was acting callous, wanting the Emilia camp dead and not wanting to risk any of her own supporters for the sake of another.
Issue is that wasn’t the intention. Crusch is meant to be noble, who makes a judgment call on Subaru based on Subaru’s faults rather than the request.
In one corner we have the aging, black and white Witch Echidna.
In the other corner we have the forever young, stunningly beautiful and colorful Spirit Beatrice.
Literally everything the Witch wished she could be.
The same with Al and Subaru. Almost mirrored and inverted opposites.
10100 : 11010
:
I’m so delusional I’m making random comparisons.
This is a strange comment. I’m sure Beatrice doesn’t embody what Echidna wants to be. I understand that she hates herself and hates being a witch, but I don’t think she ever wanted to be like Beatrice. If you’re more attracted to Beatrice’s beauty than Echidna’s, then you’re kind of a pedophile.
least insane Tappei glazer:
Does anyone know when Chapter 37 will be released?
Next month
I don’t really like Al being Subaru’s clone ngl
What if it’s not that Aldebaran is Subaru’s clone but Subaru is Al’s clone
I will admit that I didn’t like the twist of Al=Subaru but I have faith that Tappei’s explanation will be an interesting one. I didn’t like it because it would’ve felt cheap, but these excerpts are interesting, I won’t lie. Despite how obvious it might seem to others, it still feels like we’re in the dark and I’m enjoying the ride of figuring things out.
Tappei always throws multiple plot twists. There surely is more to this. This could also be entirely misleading who knows.
Tappei himself kills the fun of solving mysteries. The characters go out of their way to refuse to discuss important mysteries. They just say it’s not important and they don’t need to know. Or they don’t even mention it. I would like the characters to try to solve Al’s mysteries, and we (readers) along with them, but that doesn’t happen. The truth is revealed in the side stories. I’m 100% sure that the characters won’t find out anything or even see Al’s face, and they’ll forget about Al the day after they win. Tappei seems to have acquired a hatred for detective fiction as a genre. It’s too bad that this is how the story started. Tappei once said that he wouldn’t reveal anything until the final arc…
Arc 4 had Roswaal literally saying I did it out of nowhere for an episode. It’s always been cheap exposition. Don’t know what detective shit you’re talking about.
It was still much better than what we have now.
Hehehe….. was it ever discussed what happened to shotabaru’s gate between adult – infantization – adult situations?
What mysteries can they solve anyway? Right now he is a criminal and terrorist to the kingdom so ofcouse stopping him is the highest priority. Any talking can come after, not to mention they have zero clue about him, even Priscilla make him her knight just for the fun of it and know next to nothing about him.
There won’t be any talking after. They’ve only discussed Subaru’s origins once in a year and a half, and it was a failed cycle. The devil is on the loose. They need to discuss how to put Satella back in her cage and how she’s connected to Al and Subaru. They also need to explore Subaru and Al’s peculiarities to gain a better understanding of Al and his goal. They don’t want to talk about how to get rid of the devil or what Al is trying to do with Subaru.
You call him hackpei yet you are faithfully here indulging in it as soon as a new chapter is released… So it is what is lol.
Same. I still think it’s too obvious to be true. Maybe a clone? Either way, I trust the reveal will be satisfying.
What part of the last 8 Arcs was plain and linear? What part of the 130 chapters of Arc 7 indicated it to end with Zombies??
Blud hates a writer for 2 arcs that were overall good simply because he didnt like their genre.
What a Clown
“overall good”
Shut the hell up. Did the tanking sales and collapsing wn readership during vollachia ring any bells?
Light novel sales in Vollachia have fallen by a factor of 3.
okay, and? i still liked arc 7 and arc 8. still loved lots of them, loved the characters, especially named chapters.
vollachia was long and kinda different, with more alternative POV chapters than any other so far, so it’s not surprising people didn’t buy the light novels as much, but it’s still good. i don’t really think how well something sells should be one’s ultimate way of judging a narrative. if it were, then book toc would be peak literature, as would 50 shades of grey. so i think people have the right to still find this series good when it hasn’t sold as well in recent volumes.
You should have stopped at “okay, and?” cause everything else after that is useless
okay, and?
If sales stay the same, then fine. There are masterpieces that sell poorly. But such a strong drop in sales always means a loss of quality. ReZero in Vollachia has lost everything that fans loved him for before.
Not liking the direction the story has taken isn’t grounds to insult me. I don’t care about viewership or sales. Maybe I’m not critical enough to see the bad things about Re:Zero, but it’s my favorite story so far. I like the tonal shift. I like not knowing what’s next. I like Al’s Authority. I like seeing the Emilia Camp so pissed. I miss Subaru. Go away if you’re so mad.
Hahaha, you poor idiot. If you’re so disparaging of the series, you should abandon it and never come back. You’re so funny.
This could mean that Flugel was split into two parts, a main part, Subaru, and a secondary part, Aldebaran. It’s impossible that Aldebaran is Subaru from a different timeline or smh like that. He’s a following star of the Pleiades (Subaru). Perhaps Flugel is Subaru himself, and he returned to the real world and lost his memories of Re:Zero world, while Aldebaran likely stayed in this world to take his place.
How can you so sure about subaru=flugel?
Denying this seems weird. There was plenty of evidence for Al=Subaru and Flugel=Subaru. Al was just confirmed. 1) Flugel was an isekai from modern Japan. 2) Flugel and Subaru knew English and German words. 3) Subaru thought Flugel’s name was cool. 4) They both have the same communication style and behavior, even down to specific actions that were the same. 5) They both wear black and orange clothes. 6) They both have black hair and the same haircut. 7) The Sage was portrayed in history as a great mage, but in reality he was a weakling, and all of his magical achievements, including sealing Satella, were done by Echidna.
8) Flugel was described as someone who was always on the verge of death, but never died. This alludes to RbD, meaning Satella loved him, but she only loved Subaru. 9) We know for sure that Subaru has been in this world 400 years ago, and Flugel and Subaru interacted with the same people during that era. 10) Flugel was a Sage, and Subaru can become one. 11) Flugel named his tower the same as Subaru named his army.
A good writer works around what he’s got. A hack deletes characters and reinserts their doppelgangers when he sees fit.
Lmao drop it your presence isn’t needed
Very on the nose, that illustration.
I’m so upset. I’m pissing and crying right now.
You should piss in your own feeding tube. More nutrients.
if there are nutrients in your piss then I recommend going to the emergency room, your kidneys are failing
other than minerals, water and maybe vitamins of course
Well, he’s bedridden. What did you expect?
for real. Tappei could have done some Death Note shit with Gluttony, but nah.
Who knows, maybe he does something clever with it in the future…
for real. Tappei could have done some Death Note shit with Gluttony, but nah.
I’m curious. Wdym by teppei going the death note route with gluttony?
*yap session incoming*- pt 1
After this prologue, I’ve come to realize that the feeling I’ve had toward Al’s character—or rather, how he’s been portrayed—has become somewhat clearer. I speculate that Al is a kind of aberration: a manufactured “hero” or star who was ultimately discarded. A dying star, so to speak, who now wishes to defy the expectations placed upon him and simply be himself, as he has expressed.
Many of us have long believed that Al might be some kind of clone, possibly of Flugel or Subaru. They’ll be three other parts to this speculation to bear with me
Part 2
But I’d like to propose a more arbitrary theory: that Al was intended to be a clone of Flugel—who was renowned 400 years ago—with the sole purpose of recreating the sage. In other words, a new “star” who could stand alongside the Sword Saint and the Divine Dragon to once again seal the great calamity, Satella. Since Satella was never truly defeated—only sealed—it stands to reason that someone or something foresaw the return of that catastrophe. It has even been explicitly stated by the Witches that if Flugel had not formed a pact with the Divine Dragon, or if only two of the three “heroes” had fought against the calamity, the world would have been consumed. In other words, to defeat such a force, all the “stars” (or heroes) must align and act together.
Part 3
I imagine another reason for initiating a cloning process was due to the uncertainty of whether another exceptional individual would ever appear in the world again. And then Subaru arrived—an anomaly that disrupted the natural flow of events. His very presence, as acknowledged by Echidna, is peculiar and desirable.
Part 4
It makes me wonder: once Subaru was configured or perhaps prophesied like a name on a ancient book did some abnormalitt take place and began altering fate itself, was that the moment Al was discarded in some way? Did he become obsolete or considered flawed in comparison to Subaru’s potential but also Al’s very own actions?
Of course, I understand there are many assumptions and possible flaws in this theory. But I’m sharing it as a speculative idea—something to consider with a grain of salt.
Also, in part 3 I accidentally pasted the same structure again, my bad
I guess they are both failed copies. This explains why Al’s authority is just a weaker version of Subaru’s. The main thing that is not clear is how Al had been in this world way before Subaru appeared. This gives some credence to the Subaru = Flugel theory. Imagine Flugel was also a failed copy of Subaru that existed in the world even before Al.
My explanation of Subaru, Flugel, and Al. Subaru has been in this world for a VERY long time. The person who summoned him is long dead. When he dies completely, he enters the Corridor of Memories, where all people are reset. This is impossible with Subaru, he is brought to the state of the moment he arrived in this world, and then spat out. He called himself Flugel in his past life because his real name was known in the life before that. Al is the person who took a copy of Subaru’s soul into himself, and was then sent to kill Satella before the Great Disaster. He couldn’t bring himself to do it, was sealed for 400 years, and is now trying to do it in some other way through Subaru.
While things are begining to unravel, I’m wondering if Al knows Beatrice because she traveled with Flugel(subaru) before her days in sanctuary, but she herself may have forgotten Subaru if he erased himself from the world, which is likely what happened, to only have the name flugel remain. In arc 6 chapter 25 Subaru makes a weird comment when the staircase is revealed, He says something like “It kinda feels like it’s been a long time since we last came here.” to Beatrice and Emilia. She asks him what he means but he doesn’t explain. This isn’t in reference to any loop we know, and the staircase only just appeared. This feels like an unconscious flugel making a comment about being glad to have made it that far. I don’t know what else it could be.
So who is the person who is connected to Al that he doesn’t want to see? Someone from older ago then like roswal? Beatrice obv not cause she is imprisoned…roswaal doesn’t make sense…someone from vollachia maybe?
Is this a fanfic? In canon, Beatrice didn’t travel 400 years ago, and the Flugel name wasn’t eaten. Al knows Beatrice for the same reason he knew many other people before meeting them. For example, Ram and Frederica. It’s not explained yet what exactly that reason is. I’m sure Al was afraid to fight Satella. He said it twice before volume 40.
Bro…. Then write your own and show us how it’s done
Obsessed
Nice!
I really am starting to see why so many people consider witch cult translation comments to be twitter but somehow even worse. It’s quite sad, trolls ruining everyone else’s fun to be feel special and people who do actually want to express their criticism just to lumped together with trolls due to the trolls’s actions. As for Subaru being Al. I do hope there is more to the twist but as long as Tappei writes it well which I have faith he will (guess that’s a hot take nowadays) then I’m all good with it. Thanks for the translation!
honestly half wish they just turned off comments at this point. or at the very least, idk, moderated them slightly, flagging the complete trolls and weird gooners. glad to be some folks are reasonable though, and I appreciate the translation too.
i mean tbh, i’m pretty sure the weird sex shit folks some folks are on is a lot more like discord than anything we’re saying.
no they’re weird and make me very uncomfortable. perhaps if you idk, wrote this stuff under ‘re zero erotica’ on ao3 or something then i wouldn’t care, but it’s more the fact that you’re uh, putting it in the comment sections directly under normal chapter translations that have nothing to do with sex or ‘cucking’ remotely. i guess what i’m saying is there are appropriate spaces for weird fetishes and despite how cursed these comment sections seem to become, ideally the comments under the most widely available english translations of a popular webnovel should not be used as one of those spaces.
There are like 30 people here at most. No one gives a shit.
Bruh you ain’t 30 people. Speak for yourself
Is there a reason no one is commenting on “Just like you, I’m a complete failure of a girl”?
What does she mean by that – why ‘of a girl?’ What, was Al originally a genderbent clone of Subaru or something who was like ‘bro I’m so bad at being a girl I’mma be a boy’? Was that referencing crossdressing as Natsumi? Is Al actually something like an empty version of Echidna given Subaru’s memories and appearance or something? Thus why he’d be a failure of a girl? Or is the ‘of a girl’ part meaningless for the comparison, rather it’s supposed to be just about the failure of their respective existences?
Subaru is already a genderbent version of himself: see Natsumi Schwartz.
I was kind of thinking about the same thing about the comment on if there was anything to it or not. I don’t really have any speculation formed on the specifics of that yet, but my initial impression was that it was something related to Natsumi and cross dressing maybe, like since it would be possible to just say ‘failure of a person instead’, so I guess that leaves me with the impression that there was supposed to be some meaning behind using ‘girl’ there specifically, even if it was to convey Echidna being kind of out of it and referring to someone else, but that seems unlikely to me at least. If the line is about cross dressing, I think that would make some sense, being that there’s a scene in arc 4 where I think Echidna was alluding to it at the end of the first trial. 1/5
When she comments that the girl’s school uniform stood out in Subaru’s memories and she then asks if he likes that type of clothing. Which on its surface seems like her maybe trying to tease Subaru for having a crush on classmates or even her getting a bit flirtatious. But with the added context that Subaru cross dressed for the first three days of high school, it would seem more likely that she was alluding to that, and trying to get a rise out of Subaru due to that more than anything. So I guess the line came across to me as being a combination of being a failure of a clone sort of sentiments, combined with maybe frustration over not fitting into what constitutes being a ‘proper girl’. 2/5
To some extent that definitely could be seen with Echidna’s early interactions with Subaru and her comments about just being a maiden and trying to act cute which Subaru brushes away and she gets flustered about but my initial impression of that had been that she was just joking around, rather than her actually being insecure about the matter, but maybe there was something sincere to her wanting to be seen as maidenly in those instances. Subaru definitely also seems a put off by being treated as a guy while as Natsumi, so I’d say the two of them feel somewhat insecure about not being seen as a ‘real girl’ in various cases. Uh so I guess that’s my take on the line. 3/5
As for why each of them would respectively feel upset about failing at being a girl, which I think that’s part of what is meant by the ‘failure of a girl’ bit, it could be just general frustration with being treated like an imposter, or maybe something to do with how women can be treated harshly by society for not living up to certain expectations for how people of a certain gender should act. On what you speculated with ‘bro I’m so bad at being a girl I’mma be a boy’ I’d speculate that the implications of the line would probably be the opposite, with it Subaru (or rather Al in this scene) wanting to be a girl but not being able to, there isn’t really much info on how Al feels about this, but Subaru seems to have sentiments to this effect,- 4/5
-so for now I’m just going to guess that maybe that Al feels the same with how similar the two of them are.
I’m curious if you have any other thoughts on the line as well. 5/5
I doubt very much that Tappei wrote this line with deep thoughts about the role of women in society and transvestites. It seems to me that there are 2 meanings in this phrase: 1 – Echidna’s regret for her failures. 2 – Echidna’s complaint that she was treated like a monster instead of a person. Echidna prefers to be feminine. She has a giant gate, which means she must have huge physical characteristics. She should be able to punch her hand through two people at the same time, like Roswaal. But she prefers to weaken. Her dress is as uncomfortable and impractical as possible, it is only suitable for living in a palace.
I mean, I do kind of agree, but Tappei isn’t exactly a stranger to putting thought into gender stuff. Re Zero has always had commentary on gender and gender roles throughout it, whether it’s Capella’s rant on love and objectification, Ferris’s magic puberty blockers, toxic masculinity as seen in characters like Regulus, or stuff like Natsumi, you’re likely right a good part of it has to do with just regret for her failures and being treated as a monster rather than a person. I just think that can be true, but gender stuff can also be true. Side note, I’m pretty sure she is actually just limited to being weak physically, and it’s not a purposeful choice. Roswaal had to go out of his way to learn his martial arts.
Okay, but there’s still her clothes. Of all the combat characters, only Echidna and Priscilla have sacrificed comfort for beauty. Both offer their bodies as rewards. However, Priscilla has a change of clothes for combat. Although I don’t remember these explanations about she can’t be physically strong.
Al mentions that she is super physically weak in arc 8 when fighting Sphinx version of witch of greed.
omg even the turds are woke now? that or someone ate an ‘oops, all rainbows’ lucky charms cereal. quick, before they get away with existing in your general vicinity, call the woke police once they’re done ‘policing’ the sky for having rainbows!
She doesn’t seem so petty or so in love with Subaru. She is a Witch of Greed, not Envy. Considering that Satella went to destroy the world, she hardly won in a love triangle. I think they all quarreled and stopped communicating, but there was no winner.
…. we using kinda racist language now too? the heck.
>”the heck”
Get a fucking grip, you sound mentally challenged.
lol lmao
buddy put a greater than symbol and thinks he’s him
P.S: Write Moar for more.
I wonder; if there are two personalities for WOE and Satella, why couldn’t there be a similar situation for Echidna?
No. Satella had a split personality due to incompatibility with the witch factor. Therefore, she became the only witch without a name corresponding to the myth and the asteroid. There are no signs of a split personality in Echidna. She has a normal witch name.
Lying through your teeth is very bad
MOAR!
Al will always be John Dark Souls. regardless of if he’s subaru or not.
I still think Al is some form of Flugel, it doesn’t make sense for him to be Subaru timeline wise. Even Subaru or the witch doesn’t seem to be able to affect time like that.
Subaru is also a form of Flugel I think, but maybe a more perfect form or the actual Flugel, idk.
I think Al = Subaru is too obvious, but also doesn’t make sense.
Then what about the guy spamming I love Rem cuck porn and another spamming I want Rem dead?
Stop being a fucking hypocrite.
My pp was twitching so maybe he’s alright afterall
I want both waifus to get out of the story,
Same, but sadly, teppei won’t allow that to happen
Cmt section used to enjoyable but now reading it make me feel like my iq dropped by a fews
Yeah, a fews
it terrifies me, genuinely.
Obviously we saw this coming but to me the true reveal and what I’m looking forward to isn’t confirmation that Al “is” Subaru, it’ll be *how* Al is Subaru and to what extent. The feeling I get reading this is reminiscent to Doors 5-8 of The House of Fata Morgana or Paths in AoT. This isn’t a massive reveal or the answer to one of the three big mysteries of Re: Zero yet, just a piece of the puzzle.
yeah, especially with how much re zero has been setting up the concept of multiple selves and identity stuff for ages, especially with sphinx and how she notably isn’t anything close to being echidna in the end despite having all of her memories – feel like al was going to have some major connection to subaru, the question has more always been to what extent, and how that connection happened/how he was created. we already know for what purpose he was made- entirely to oppose subaru, something which he notably chose not to do until he lost all hope with priscilla’s death, but why was he made? was he created before or after echidna’s experiments with ryuzu clones? could the hall of memories be involved in some way given his apparent knowledge on books of the dead? etc.
He was created to save/kill Satella, but failed in this goal. Al and Sphinx were created by different Echidnas. The Sphinx was created by original Echidna. Al was created by a clone of original Echidna, whom she created at the age of 19. Sphinx was created in the final weeks before the Great Catastrophe, several years later. I assume that Al is too, as he failed to solve the problem with Satella, who destroyed half of the world, and he believes that he deserves to die as punishment. He has stated that he has been wearing a mask since birth. This implies that Al has become Subaru, if Subaru is mask for him. He isn’t clone.
Okay, but to be fair they were replaying to someone called ‘Trune”. Tbh just thought they misspelled the name lol.
Also damn, new slur dropped for me? (Am a transwomen myself). Lol. Lmao
Yeah, arched down and inwards.
I’m finally caught up!
That’s Subaru, I don’t even need to see the face
I finally caught up to the latest chapter. Feels kinda strange honestly.
so what al=subaru there has to be more how the hell did a version of subaru reach that point
Flugel saved the world, but by virtues of his authority, he was unable to die. What was he to do if he didn’t want to live forever? What would have to happen to the mechanics of the world for him to ‘rest?’ Did pre-witch Satella take Flugel’s witch factor so that he could rest, resulting in her becoming the demented split personality ‘witch cultist’ Satella? Her love for him being the one part of her that remained constantly repeating ‘i love you’, is much like Geuse and possibly Sirius own incompatibilities with their witch factors.
…
Could Flugel have attempted to clone himself as a failsafe in the same way Echidna attempted to in sanctuary? This aligns with the current Echidna(castle) and Al being failures. Al, Echidna(castle), Sphynx, and Ryuzu are all vessels created with a purpose to replicate a being, but none are compatible with the soul they are given the task of housing, resulting in the development of what are essentially new beings with personalities of their own.
…
Applying this logic to the original Echidna and her experiments, one could look at Beatrice and Echidna(scarf) as the inverse of the experiments of Al and Sphynx. Instead of a vessel to contain a soul, they were possibly attempts by the original Echidna at creating a proper soul to then mold and place into an appropriate vessel. *On the note of souls and vessels, the author may have drawn inspiration from the Egyptian Ka and Ba or other similar cultural beliefs about the body and soul, this is very much a huge theme across all human history.
…
Al now speaks to Emelia as if she is Satella, and not Emelia as her current self. (Note: I don’t remember any similar behaviors until recently but I could just be forgetting, sorry not rereading allat to fact check a speculative comment) Al lamented how she didn’t look at him the way she looked at Subaru, but it was as if he wasnt talking about Emelia right in front of him but of someone a long time ago who simply looked like her.
…
How are we meant to interpret these deliberately placed interactions? Was Al originally supposed to be the new ‘target’ of the witch of envy in order to keep her in check, making him lament his failures? Was he a manufactured ‘hero’ to replace, or reincarnate Fluegel? Was it simply some past form of jealousy from someone who stole Fluegel’s body and desired Satella or his authority? Or is this a manifestation of Flugel’s spirit’s love for Satella that a fake Flugel could not fulfill? We’ve seen similar effects with the Dragonhusk of Volcanica having personality conflicts when the original personality gains strength from some source (Volcanica looking at Felt).
…
In my completely speculative opinion, it seems like whoever or whatever ‘Aldebarran’ originally was, there is some soul and vessel swapping shenanigans happening with the books of death. We were shown in great detail inside the tower how they work, first with Meili and now with Petra. The current being known as Aldebarran (not the dragon husk) could have been mistakenly thought to be a second coming of flugel and forced to read the book after being isekaid. They could be Flugel’s soul inside an improper vessel, or someone else inside Flugel’s body, as Al did by having Volcanica read his book of death. The author has demonstrated how books of death work as a plot device. I think it’s safe to say that’s what’s going on here. In exactly what manner, I guess we’ll see.
Dude, how could you not put any specific thoughts into such a long text?
Is echidna a failed satella clone?, I know she doesnt look exactly like satella, but she still looks very similar. And Spinx whom is a failed echidna clone doesnt look anything like echidna.
Also echidna clearly has an unknown connection with satella, just like alderbaren has an unkown connection to subaru.
Bruh what? Echidna was born a witch while Satella at one point got envy factor that was incompatible with her which created split personalities.
Obvious red herring
