???: [――Just like you, I’m a complete failure of a girl.]
Thus hearing the Witch’s words, spoken with downcast eyes framed by long lashes, Aldebaran became unsure of what to say, merely sinking into silence.
The grassland upon which Aldebaran’s trysts with the Witch occurred repeatedly without fail, that place which did not exist anywhere in this world, was an alternate dimension created by the Witch, one which could be called a castle of fantasies.
Even when he did inquire about its nature, she would invariably attempt to deceive him by saying “It’s something like a dream when you doze off”; upon that grassland, on this day―― night had fallen, unusually.
Aldebaran: [I guess even unusual things can happen.]
As the star-studded black sky looked down upon him, Aldebaran sighed in wonder.
On a fundamental level, the time of the grassland was fixed at midday. Given that this place was merely a landscape envisioned by its creator, the Witch, it was divorced from notions of true time. Hence, the plains were always bright, and decorated by clear skies.
Albeit the topical person required not any colors aside from black and white, were they truly the possessor of such unexpectedly high spirits that a patch of bright, blue sky would peek out of their heart of hearts, without fail?
Yet despite the matter of him harboring such doubts, he had been surprised by night falling upon the meadow nonetheless. To say nothing of the fact that the Witch in question was dozing off atop the hill.
Witch: [――――]
Her upper body resting upon the white table, the Witch took muted, sleeping breaths.
As Aldebaran was to inquire on the topic of the unfamiliar nighttime scenery, upon realizing her slumber, he bated his breath, fixedly gazing at the Witch’s sleeping face.
His initial impression, was that of thinking “the Witch also sleeps, eh”.
Obvious though it might have been, that was the extent to which the Witch’s manner of life was an enigma. She was a being who could create something like an alternate dimension at will, so if it happened that she did not sleep, he would not have been surprised. In fact, until the present day, not once had he borne witness to her sleeping visage.
Aldebaran: [She’s infuriatingly beautiful…]
It was something he had known, but even when asleep, she possessed abnormally prominent beauty.
The almond-shaped eyes housing unparalleled knowledge and curiosity were closed, but her facial features had likely taken God quite a bit of time to tune to perfection, and her long, beautiful white hair and seemingly faded white skin seemed to declare that no other color needed be made known to the world. ――It truly infuriated him.
Aldebaran: [Thinking about it, this is a rare opportunity, I should hurry and grab something to scribble on her face――]
Witch: [――Uh.]
Aldebaran: [――Hk!]
As soon as he thought to do something rude, a faint noise escaped the lips, causing Aldebaran to stiffen.
Despite not having done anything, he felt like a child whose mischief was being reprimanded. However, in the next moment, the tension in Aldebaran’s body would break his personal record.
――After all, in the eyes of the dozing Witch, he caught a faint glimpse of a teardrop.
Aldebaran: [Teacher――]
Witch: [――Mph.]
Unconsciously, Aldebaran touched the shoulder of the sleeping Witch, and shook her body. With a faint groan at the call and the touch to her shoulder, closed eyelids slowly opened.
As if to ascertain, those black eyes blinked several times, and reflected Aldebaran right before her,
Witch: […Aldebaran?]
Aldebaran: [Ah, yeah, that’s right, Teacher. It ain’t like yourself to be taking a snooze out here.]
Witch: [――――]
Before Aldebaran as he concealed his discomposure, the Witch silently got up. Placing her slender fingers to her jaw, the awakening Witch contemplated the situation.
And then――,
Witch: [――A dream, was it.]
The fact that it had been so was unfortunate; such was the nuance carried by the mutter.
After muttering, the Witch wiped away the tears in her eyes with her fingers, clearing away the aftertaste of slumber. At that nonchalant gesture, Aldebaran felt a strange sense of loneliness.
Thus, he unconsciously ended up asking about it.
Aldebaran: [To cry while dreaming, you a kid or something? ――What sort of dream, was it?]
So he spoke.
Witch: [――――]
Aldebaran fell silent at the awkwardness, painfully regretting his question.
In all honesty, he had envisioned being bombarded with a great amount of knowledge regarding dreams, or to be poked fun at, teased for expressing interest in the Witch’s dream; the usual progression.
But, to Aldebaran’s question, the Witch did not respond with the usual progression.
Instead, presented as an answer was the Witch’s comment from the beginning.
???: [――Just like you, I’m a complete failure of a girl.]
Aldebaran: [――――]
Ruminating over the Witch’s words once more, Aldebaran reached the extremities of confusion amidst the silence.
Just what on earth had she meant? Did she not care about being posed a direct question such as this? Even though she would usually blather on and on without end continuously, what was the reason behind her being so well-mannered right now?
――Even supposing he did enquire it, and ascertain it, would the Witch remain unharmed?
Witch: […Good grief, just which one of us is the child?]
Aldebaran: [Huh…]
Witch: [You said that I’d become so small, that I was just like a kid. Worry not, I am not some cute existence capable of being hurt by you. ――I am a wicked Witch, you know?]
Closing one eye in a wink, the Witch voiced her same old line. Witnessing a glimpse of her characteristic childishness therein, Aldebaran heaved a great sigh.
For some reason, it felt like there was no true lifelike feeling in it.
Aldebaran: [Shit, to be feeling this sorta way because of someone like Teacher…]
Witch: [How peculiar. As far as I know, “Teacher” is supposed to be a title of honor, and yet I cannot sense a shred of reverence. Even though you were just trying to hide your embarrassment at peeping at a maiden’s sleeping face.]
Aldebaran: [You go about these things way too maliciously!]
That he was on the verge of being traumatized, was Aldebaran’s protest, yet the Witch displayed zero concern regarding his complaints, tapping her finger on the table in good humor.
That instant, cups filled with tea manifested, one of them for Aldebaran.
Witch: [Come on now, cheer up. Should I take the trouble of producing confections as well?]
Aldebaran: [It’s fine. Even if I eat here it won’t fill my stomach, so when I return to the other side I’d be all jumbled up, feeling like I’m full while my actual body’s hungry.]
Witch: [When you say that, I just want you to eat even more.]
Aldebaran: [You’re the worst!]
Shouting at the Witch who did not conceal even a shred of her impishness, Aldebaran rested his chin in his palm. Then, stealing a glance at the gleeful Witch, he ascertained that any traces of tears were nowhere to be found.
Aldebaran: [――――]
The teardrops had vanished. And yet, an unfading lump lingered in Aldebaran’s chest.
That which the Witch had said was a joke, was likely no such thing, but the truth. ――Even she, beautiful and wise as she was, would have times where she cursed herself, and wanted to cry.
Just who in the world could see the Witch as a failed existence?
Witch: [Hm?]
Aldebaran: [――. It’s nothing, sleepyhead Teacher.]
Directing insults at the Witch tilting her head devoid of malice, Aldebaran brought the cup to his mouth.
Likely, he had missed his opportunity. A chance to question her on that very thing, would it ever come around again? Supposing it did, would Aldebaran wish to know the answer?
If he did wish to know, would the reason be because he sought sympathy or compassion?
Or perhaps――,
Aldebaran: [――Even a fake starry sky’s still quite the wonder to behold, yeah?]
Was his wish perhaps to have those black eyes, which albeit bore a jet-black hue selfsame to that of the starry sky, appeared to dazzle even more than the latter, turn towards his own self?
Aldebaran, who was the same as the Witch in being a failed existence, knew not.
Literally looks identical, I’m shook
He def stole his clothes and copied his haircut ngl
Bruh
It is fanart though, right?
no. its official
It’s official but the official illustrator has gone off script before (regulus was supposed to have darker clothes in his appearances going off tappeis descriptions but never once did)
This is far too much of a resemblance to be a mistake or the illustrator going off script
no
Good stuff. I’ve got a feeling Echidna will once again become best girl in the next few arcs
“Once again”. You made me chuckle.
I suppose its referring to Dream Dona being a failed, emotionless version of the original Echidona. Being more “witch” like than her original self. Any clues gang?
oh hmmm idk i actually have no idea what this chapter could mean, i never really thought echidna and dreamchidna were different people yk, but it makes sense and tappei is always unpredictable
It was said at least twice in the 4th arc in WN that Echidna from Castle of Dreams is a clone. Al=Subaru was absolutely predictable. I don’t think this Echidna is defective and insensitive compared to the original. This is the second time we’ve seen her cry. Most likely, the original Echidna copied herself into this one at a time when she was at the lowest moral point in her life.
But if that last bit would be true, why would Roswaal hate on Trial-Echidna?
That would mean he doesn’t know.
It doesn’t say anywhere that he hates her. It says that he and Beatrice don’t care about her.
I hate the fact that they look so similar. Just think its bad either way, he beeing subaru/clone or not
The signs were all there yet we still ignored the obvious. Bravo Tappei
Wtf you talking about? People have been claiming Subaru = Al for eons because of all of the shining bright signs Tappei has lit along the way. It’s because of that, that I feel we’re being baited into believing it.
Correct me if I’m wrong but for all we knew before this chapter, Al could have known Echidna when she was alive, but this confirms he went to the Sanctuary and tried to solve the trials? maybe? He also mentioned his real body so it could really be the sanctuary, but if we go by his word and believe he was isekaied like 20 years before Subaru (i dont remember the exact time) wouldn’t Ryuzu and the rest of the Sanctuary people know him, maybe even Roswaal. This is so fishy I’m starting to believe in different timelines at this point
I think she summoned his soul directly from the Island of Gladiators at night.
Hey guys do you know if arc 9 is currently in hiatus? I heard Jakez say that but im not sure, I can’t wait for more chapters
It’s not in hiatus, Tappei takes breaks in between volumes and next volume is out in september, so the next chapters will probably start coming out in July probably
Jakez has a higher digit count than IQ… Don’t trust him for any legitimate info
I nutted to this one
Yeah same here
So Aldebaran is a copy of Subaru’s soul, I wonder if it’s a similar situation to sphinx where the vessel doesn’t match the soul. Him looking like Subaru in this prologue could be caused by Al being inside the “castle of fantasies”.
1) It has been confirmed. No surprise at all. No emotions. This has long been obvious to everyone except people who kiss Tappei’s ass. There were a lot of people on Reddit who wrote that he was a genius, and therefore the obvious option was wrong. 2) Echidna showed again how difficult and good a character (not person) she is. The best female character in ReZero. Some scenes with Echidna contain more depth than all the appearances of Tappei’s favorite gorilla doll for the 4th-9th arc combined. This is considering that we know very little about Echidna.
Mistake. 5-9.
In one corner we have the aging, black and white Witch Echidna.
In the other corner we have the forever young, stunningly beautiful and colorful Spirit Beatrice.
Literally everything the Witch wished she could be.
The same with Al and Subaru. Almost mirrored and inverted opposites.
10100 : 11010
:
I’m so delusional I’m making random comparisons.
This is a strange comment. I’m sure Beatrice doesn’t embody what Echidna wants to be. I understand that she hates herself and hates being a witch, but I don’t think she ever wanted to be like Beatrice. If you’re more attracted to Beatrice’s beauty than Echidna’s, then you’re kind of a pedophile.
least insane Tappei glazer:
Does anyone know when Chapter 37 will be released?
Next month
I don’t really like Al being Subaru’s clone ngl
What if it’s not that Aldebaran is Subaru’s clone but Subaru is Al’s clone
I will admit that I didn’t like the twist of Al=Subaru but I have faith that Tappei’s explanation will be an interesting one. I didn’t like it because it would’ve felt cheap, but these excerpts are interesting, I won’t lie. Despite how obvious it might seem to others, it still feels like we’re in the dark and I’m enjoying the ride of figuring things out.
Tappei always throws multiple plot twists. There surely is more to this. This could also be entirely misleading who knows.
Tappei himself kills the fun of solving mysteries. The characters go out of their way to refuse to discuss important mysteries. They just say it’s not important and they don’t need to know. Or they don’t even mention it. I would like the characters to try to solve Al’s mysteries, and we (readers) along with them, but that doesn’t happen. The truth is revealed in the side stories. I’m 100% sure that the characters won’t find out anything or even see Al’s face, and they’ll forget about Al the day after they win. Tappei seems to have acquired a hatred for detective fiction as a genre. It’s too bad that this is how the story started. Tappei once said that he wouldn’t reveal anything until the final arc…
Arc 4 had Roswaal literally saying I did it out of nowhere for an episode. It’s always been cheap exposition. Don’t know what detective shit you’re talking about.
It was still much better than what we have now.
Hehehe….. was it ever discussed what happened to shotabaru’s gate between adult – infantization – adult situations?
What mysteries can they solve anyway? Right now he is a criminal and terrorist to the kingdom so ofcouse stopping him is the highest priority. Any talking can come after, not to mention they have zero clue about him, even Priscilla make him her knight just for the fun of it and know next to nothing about him.
There won’t be any talking after. They’ve only discussed Subaru’s origins once in a year and a half, and it was a failed cycle. The devil is on the loose. They need to discuss how to put Satella back in her cage and how she’s connected to Al and Subaru. They also need to explore Subaru and Al’s peculiarities to gain a better understanding of Al and his goal. They don’t want to talk about how to get rid of the devil or what Al is trying to do with Subaru.
Same. I still think it’s too obvious to be true. Maybe a clone? Either way, I trust the reveal will be satisfying.
This could mean that Flugel was split into two parts, a main part, Subaru, and a secondary part, Aldebaran. It’s impossible that Aldebaran is Subaru from a different timeline or smh like that. He’s a following star of the Pleiades (Subaru). Perhaps Flugel is Subaru himself, and he returned to the real world and lost his memories of Re:Zero world, while Aldebaran likely stayed in this world to take his place.
How can you so sure about subaru=flugel?
Denying this seems weird. There was plenty of evidence for Al=Subaru and Flugel=Subaru. Al was just confirmed. 1) Flugel was an isekai from modern Japan. 2) Flugel and Subaru knew English and German words. 3) Subaru thought Flugel’s name was cool. 4) They both have the same communication style and behavior, even down to specific actions that were the same. 5) They both wear black and orange clothes. 6) They both have black hair and the same haircut. 7) The Sage was portrayed in history as a great mage, but in reality he was a weakling, and all of his magical achievements, including sealing Satella, were done by Echidna.
8) Flugel was described as someone who was always on the verge of death, but never died. This alludes to RbD, meaning Satella loved him, but she only loved Subaru. 9) We know for sure that Subaru has been in this world 400 years ago, and Flugel and Subaru interacted with the same people during that era. 10) Flugel was a Sage, and Subaru can become one. 11) Flugel named his tower the same as Subaru named his army.
Very on the nose, that illustration.
I’m so upset. I’m pissing and crying right now.
You should piss in your own feeding tube. More nutrients.
if there are nutrients in your piss then I recommend going to the emergency room, your kidneys are failing
other than minerals, water and maybe vitamins of course
Well, he’s bedridden. What did you expect?
*yap session incoming*- pt 1
After this prologue, I’ve come to realize that the feeling I’ve had toward Al’s character—or rather, how he’s been portrayed—has become somewhat clearer. I speculate that Al is a kind of aberration: a manufactured “hero” or star who was ultimately discarded. A dying star, so to speak, who now wishes to defy the expectations placed upon him and simply be himself, as he has expressed.
Many of us have long believed that Al might be some kind of clone, possibly of Flugel or Subaru. They’ll be three other parts to this speculation to bear with me
Part 2
But I’d like to propose a more arbitrary theory: that Al was intended to be a clone of Flugel—who was renowned 400 years ago—with the sole purpose of recreating the sage. In other words, a new “star” who could stand alongside the Sword Saint and the Divine Dragon to once again seal the great calamity, Satella. Since Satella was never truly defeated—only sealed—it stands to reason that someone or something foresaw the return of that catastrophe. It has even been explicitly stated by the Witches that if Flugel had not formed a pact with the Divine Dragon, or if only two of the three “heroes” had fought against the calamity, the world would have been consumed. In other words, to defeat such a force, all the “stars” (or heroes) must align and act together.
Part 3
I imagine another reason for initiating a cloning process was due to the uncertainty of whether another exceptional individual would ever appear in the world again. And then Subaru arrived—an anomaly that disrupted the natural flow of events. His very presence, as acknowledged by Echidna, is peculiar and desirable.
Part 4
It makes me wonder: once Subaru was configured or perhaps prophesied like a name on a ancient book did some abnormalitt take place and began altering fate itself, was that the moment Al was discarded in some way? Did he become obsolete or considered flawed in comparison to Subaru’s potential but also Al’s very own actions?
Of course, I understand there are many assumptions and possible flaws in this theory. But I’m sharing it as a speculative idea—something to consider with a grain of salt.
Also, in part 3 I accidentally pasted the same structure again, my bad
I guess they are both failed copies. This explains why Al’s authority is just a weaker version of Subaru’s. The main thing that is not clear is how Al had been in this world way before Subaru appeared. This gives some credence to the Subaru = Flugel theory. Imagine Flugel was also a failed copy of Subaru that existed in the world even before Al.
My explanation of Subaru, Flugel, and Al. Subaru has been in this world for a VERY long time. The person who summoned him is long dead. When he dies completely, he enters the Corridor of Memories, where all people are reset. This is impossible with Subaru, he is brought to the state of the moment he arrived in this world, and then spat out. He called himself Flugel in his past life because his real name was known in the life before that. Al is the person who took a copy of Subaru’s soul into himself, and was then sent to kill Satella before the Great Disaster. He couldn’t bring himself to do it, was sealed for 400 years, and is now trying to do it in some other way through Subaru.
While things are begining to unravel, I’m wondering if Al knows Beatrice because she traveled with Flugel(subaru) before her days in sanctuary, but she herself may have forgotten Subaru if he erased himself from the world, which is likely what happened, to only have the name flugel remain. In arc 6 chapter 25 Subaru makes a weird comment when the staircase is revealed, He says something like “It kinda feels like it’s been a long time since we last came here.” to Beatrice and Emilia. She asks him what he means but he doesn’t explain. This isn’t in reference to any loop we know, and the staircase only just appeared. This feels like an unconscious flugel making a comment about being glad to have made it that far. I don’t know what else it could be.
So who is the person who is connected to Al that he doesn’t want to see? Someone from older ago then like roswal? Beatrice obv not cause she is imprisoned…roswaal doesn’t make sense…someone from vollachia maybe?
Is this a fanfic? In canon, Beatrice didn’t travel 400 years ago, and the Flugel name wasn’t eaten. Al knows Beatrice for the same reason he knew many other people before meeting them. For example, Ram and Frederica. It’s not explained yet what exactly that reason is. I’m sure Al was afraid to fight Satella. He said it twice before volume 40.
I really am starting to see why so many people consider witch cult translation comments to be twitter but somehow even worse. It’s quite sad, trolls ruining everyone else’s fun to be feel special and people who do actually want to express their criticism just to lumped together with trolls due to the trolls’s actions. As for Subaru being Al. I do hope there is more to the twist but as long as Tappei writes it well which I have faith he will (guess that’s a hot take nowadays) then I’m all good with it. Thanks for the translation!
honestly half wish they just turned off comments at this point. or at the very least, idk, moderated them slightly, flagging the complete trolls and weird gooners. glad to be some folks are reasonable though, and I appreciate the translation too.
Is there a reason no one is commenting on “Just like you, I’m a complete failure of a girl”?
What does she mean by that – why ‘of a girl?’ What, was Al originally a genderbent clone of Subaru or something who was like ‘bro I’m so bad at being a girl I’mma be a boy’? Was that referencing crossdressing as Natsumi? Is Al actually something like an empty version of Echidna given Subaru’s memories and appearance or something? Thus why he’d be a failure of a girl? Or is the ‘of a girl’ part meaningless for the comparison, rather it’s supposed to be just about the failure of their respective existences?
Subaru is already a genderbent version of himself: see Natsumi Schwartz.
I was kind of thinking about the same thing about the comment on if there was anything to it or not. I don’t really have any speculation formed on the specifics of that yet, but my initial impression was that it was something related to Natsumi and cross dressing maybe, like since it would be possible to just say ‘failure of a person instead’, so I guess that leaves me with the impression that there was supposed to be some meaning behind using ‘girl’ there specifically, even if it was to convey Echidna being kind of out of it and referring to someone else, but that seems unlikely to me at least. If the line is about cross dressing, I think that would make some sense, being that there’s a scene in arc 4 where I think Echidna was alluding to it at the end of the first trial. 1/5
When she comments that the girl’s school uniform stood out in Subaru’s memories and she then asks if he likes that type of clothing. Which on its surface seems like her maybe trying to tease Subaru for having a crush on classmates or even her getting a bit flirtatious. But with the added context that Subaru cross dressed for the first three days of high school, it would seem more likely that she was alluding to that, and trying to get a rise out of Subaru due to that more than anything. So I guess the line came across to me as being a combination of being a failure of a clone sort of sentiments, combined with maybe frustration over not fitting into what constitutes being a ‘proper girl’. 2/5
To some extent that definitely could be seen with Echidna’s early interactions with Subaru and her comments about just being a maiden and trying to act cute which Subaru brushes away and she gets flustered about but my initial impression of that had been that she was just joking around, rather than her actually being insecure about the matter, but maybe there was something sincere to her wanting to be seen as maidenly in those instances. Subaru definitely also seems a put off by being treated as a guy while as Natsumi, so I’d say the two of them feel somewhat insecure about not being seen as a ‘real girl’ in various cases. Uh so I guess that’s my take on the line. 3/5
As for why each of them would respectively feel upset about failing at being a girl, which I think that’s part of what is meant by the ‘failure of a girl’ bit, it could be just general frustration with being treated like an imposter, or maybe something to do with how women can be treated harshly by society for not living up to certain expectations for how people of a certain gender should act. On what you speculated with ‘bro I’m so bad at being a girl I’mma be a boy’ I’d speculate that the implications of the line would probably be the opposite, with it Subaru (or rather Al in this scene) wanting to be a girl but not being able to, there isn’t really much info on how Al feels about this, but Subaru seems to have sentiments to this effect,- 4/5
-so for now I’m just going to guess that maybe that Al feels the same with how similar the two of them are.
I’m curious if you have any other thoughts on the line as well. 5/5
I doubt very much that Tappei wrote this line with deep thoughts about the role of women in society and transvestites. It seems to me that there are 2 meanings in this phrase: 1 – Echidna’s regret for her failures. 2 – Echidna’s complaint that she was treated like a monster instead of a person. Echidna prefers to be feminine. She has a giant gate, which means she must have huge physical characteristics. She should be able to punch her hand through two people at the same time, like Roswaal. But she prefers to weaken. Her dress is as uncomfortable and impractical as possible, it is only suitable for living in a palace.
I mean, I do kind of agree, but Tappei isn’t exactly a stranger to putting thought into gender stuff. Re Zero has always had commentary on gender and gender roles throughout it, whether it’s Capella’s rant on love and objectification, Ferris’s magic puberty blockers, toxic masculinity as seen in characters like Regulus, or stuff like Natsumi, you’re likely right a good part of it has to do with just regret for her failures and being treated as a monster rather than a person. I just think that can be true, but gender stuff can also be true. Side note, I’m pretty sure she is actually just limited to being weak physically, and it’s not a purposeful choice. Roswaal had to go out of his way to learn his martial arts.
I wonder; if there are two personalities for WOE and Satella, why couldn’t there be a similar situation for Echidna?
No. Satella had a split personality due to incompatibility with the witch factor. Therefore, she became the only witch without a name corresponding to the myth and the asteroid. There are no signs of a split personality in Echidna. She has a normal witch name.
Al will always be John Dark Souls. regardless of if he’s subaru or not.
I still think Al is some form of Flugel, it doesn’t make sense for him to be Subaru timeline wise. Even Subaru or the witch doesn’t seem to be able to affect time like that.
Subaru is also a form of Flugel I think, but maybe a more perfect form or the actual Flugel, idk.
I think Al = Subaru is too obvious, but also doesn’t make sense.
Cmt section used to enjoyable but now reading it make me feel like my iq dropped by a fews
Yeah, a fews
it terrifies me, genuinely.
Obviously we saw this coming but to me the true reveal and what I’m looking forward to isn’t confirmation that Al “is” Subaru, it’ll be *how* Al is Subaru and to what extent. The feeling I get reading this is reminiscent to Doors 5-8 of The House of Fata Morgana or Paths in AoT. This isn’t a massive reveal or the answer to one of the three big mysteries of Re: Zero yet, just a piece of the puzzle.
I’m finally caught up!
That’s Subaru, I don’t even need to see the face
I finally caught up to the latest chapter. Feels kinda strange honestly.
so what al=subaru there has to be more how the hell did a version of subaru reach that point
